The recent visit of Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to Saudi Arabia has offered a rare glimmer of optimism for Lebanon’s economic recovery and political stability. As the country grapples with an extended financial crisis, exacerbated by governance challenges, this visit—Aoun’s first official trip abroad since taking office in January—signals a potential turning point.

Saudi Arabia remains a key regional ally, and Lebanon is in urgent need of both investment and diplomatic backing. The reaffirmation of cooperation and reform between the two nations has fueled cautious hope that Lebanon may finally be taking steps toward long-overdue economic stabilization. Rabih El-Amine, chairman of the Lebanese Executives Council, emphasizes the significance of this visit: “Lebanon has the chance to reshape its relations with Arab nations, with Saudi Arabia as the essential gateway.”

However, while strengthening regional ties is critical, the real challenge lies within Lebanon itself. The country’s financial system remains in disarray, weakened further by persistent misgovernance and corruption, which have eroded international credibility and deterred much-needed foreign investment. As El-Amine underscores, “Lebanon’s economic recovery depends on reforms, International Monetary Fund negotiations, and restoring investor confidence—factors that require long-term engagement rather than quick diplomatic wins.

The corruption crisis

Lebanon’s struggle with corruption continues to be a major impediment to its recovery. The country recently dropped two points in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI), scoring just 22 out of 100—its worst rating in years—placing it 154th out of 180 countries. Transparency International has warned that while Lebanon’s new leadership signals potential change, reform efforts remain insufficient. Political speeches alone, however inspiring, cannot erase decades of entrenched corruption that have crippled state institutions, discouraged investment, and undermined public trust.

A significant portion of Lebanon’s financial collapse can be traced back to systemic corruption in governance and the banking sector. Inaction has proven costly, as Lebanon has seen a dramatic deterioration in its economic conditions. Transparency International has emphasized that real change will only come through concrete actions, such as enforcing anti-corruption measures, increasing judicial independence, and ensuring accountability in public financial management. Several new initiatives, including Lebanon Aid Monitoring Platform (LAMP) and Ekhbar, aim to improve oversight and empower citizens to report corruption, but without legislative and executive backing, their impact will be limited.

The long road to reform

President Aoun faces a daunting task in tackling corruption. Lebanon’s latest ranking in the CPI reflects a troubling decline, dropping five places from the previous year. The price of inaction is clear: corruption hinders economic recovery, weakens investor confidence, and compromises Lebanon’s future. Without firm measures to rebuild confidence, any hope of financial recovery will remain elusive.

Yet, Lebanon’s struggle with economic reform is not new. Over the years, multiple attempts to implement necessary changes have faltered, often due to entrenched political resistance and vested interests. One of the most notable and promising reform efforts was spearheaded in 2020 by Alain Bifani, then Director General of the Ministry of Finance. As a key architect of a financial rescue plan negotiated with the International Monetary Fund, Bifani pushed for restructuring Lebanon’s banking sector and protecting small depositors. His proposals, seen as a solid and credible framework for recovery, were ultimately discarded, leading to deepening financial distress. His resignation in protest underscored the difficulty of implementing real reform in a system resistant to change.

What happens next matters

At the heart of Lebanon’s recovery must be structural reforms that go beyond isolated policy changes. This includes enforcing fiscal discipline, modernizing financial regulations, and depoliticizing key institutions. Lebanon’s banking sector, which remains paralyzed, requires urgent restructuring to restore confidence. A roadmap for transparency in public finance, including an independent oversight body, could serve as a cornerstone for institutional credibility. Additionally, business environment reforms—such as simplifying bureaucratic procedures, ensuring fair competition, and removing barriers to investment—are essential to unlocking economic growth.

However, reforms cannot be limited to financial restructuring. Lebanon’s economic challenges also stem from years of neglect in public infrastructure and social safety nets. Inflation, exacerbated by a collapsing currency and high energy costs, continues to push the poverty rate beyond 80% of the population. The government’s failure to implement targeted subsidies and strengthen social welfare systems has left vulnerable communities without support. Establishing a transparent mechanism for aid distribution and financial relief programs must be a priority if Lebanon hopes to mitigate the worsening humanitarian crisis.

A commitment to change

Despite the immense challenges, progress is possible. The Lebanese government must move beyond short-term diplomatic engagements and commit to these structural reforms to restore financial stability. Strengthening institutional transparency, creating a predictable regulatory framework, and fostering an investor-friendly climate are necessary steps toward long-term recovery. Without these efforts, Lebanon risks remaining in an economic limbo, where political promises fail to translate into meaningful change.

President Aoun’s visit to Saudi Arabia may be a step in the right direction, but without concrete reform, it risks becoming yet another missed opportunity. The path forward will require not only diplomatic overtures but a genuine commitment to economic transformation.

Mathematicians use the logarithm to express the inverse function of exponentiation. That is, the logarithm of a given number p is the exponent to which another fixed number, the base b, must be raised in order to obtain that number p. In the simplest case, the logarithm counts how many times the same factor appears in repeated multiplication;

In the simplest case, the logarithm is defined as the number of times we multiply one number to get another number.
e.g.  625 = 25 × 25 × 25= 25³, the “logarithm base 25” of 625 is 3, or log₂₅(625) = 3. Sound, earthquakes (Richter scale), star brightness, and chemistry are a few examples where logarithm is used.

A logarithm describes how a number must be multiplied to obtain additional values. It is the most practical method of expressing huge numbers. Several important properties of logarithms enable them to be expressed as additions and subtractions of logarithms.

The exponent by which ” b” must be raised to get “ a “is the logarithm of a positive real number “a “ with respect to base” b”, a positive real number not equal to 1.

Where “a” and “b” are two real numbers that are both positive.

The number y is a real number.

The argument “a” is located within the log, and the base “b” is found at the bottom.

Properties of Logarithm

• The sum of the logarithms of two numbers says a and b, is the logarithm of the product of the two numbers. Both numbers must have the same base. In other words, this theorem is known as the “product rule for logarithms”.
  For example log_a (3x) = log_a (x) + log_a (3)
  We cannot use the property of the product to simplify a logarithm which is  log₃(8) + log₄ (x)
• The difference of the logarithms of two numbers, such as a and b, is equal to the logarithm of their division. Even in this case both numbers should have  the same base. There is another name for this theorem, which is the “quotient rule for logarithms”.
  For example log₅  = log₅6 –  log₅7
  Similarly  log₅8 –  log₅9 =  log₅
• We know from this property that the power of the log is the exponent times the logarithm of the base.

By using the power of logarithm property converts the single logarithm to   multiple logarithms.

log₄(x³)=3 log₄(x)
We can also convert a multiple of a logarithm into a single logarithm. We can take the help of the quotient rule of logarithm to do this

4 log₄(8) =  log₄(8⁴) = log₄(4096)

Matt Damon’s Crypto.com TV ad compares crypto investors to early explorers, mountain climbers, the Wright brothers, astronauts, and a guy about to make out with a girl in the club. It’s been airing since October, but only this week did a mass audience take notice.

And the reaction has been brutal.

At the Financial Times, crypto critic Jemima Kelly called the ad “grotesque.” The Daily Beast declared it an “embarrassing cash grab.” The Guardian columnist Carole Cadwalladr tweeted to her 600,000 followers: “There isn’t enough yuck in the world to describe Matt Damon advertising a Ponzi scheme.”

Matt Damon is hardly the first celebrity to do a paid crypto promotion. FTX has been running ads with Tom Brady for months. Copper, which does institutional crypto custody, unveiled a new ad in November featuring the actor Rebecca Ferguson (most recently Jessica in “Dune”) pulling a cube out of a waterfall and calling Copper “the unfair advantage.” Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, and Kim Kardashian have all done paid crypto endorsements. All of them avoided this level of vitriol.

To be fair, the ad is embarrassing. The worst part is its banal concluding catchphrase: “Fortune favors the brave.” And the Damon ad is the second recent in-your-face marketing move from Crypto.com—the company forked out $700 million to slap its name on the Staples Center in L.A.

But the people trashing the Damon ad the loudest already hated crypto. The ad confirms for them the beliefs they already hold: it’s a scam, it’s a fraud. Benjamin McKenzie, from “The OC” and “Gotham,” has become their pied piper, making it his mission, in CNN appearances, to slam fellow celebrities who pump crypto.

Even accepting Bitcoin donations is enough to enrage them. When Mozilla, the company behind internet browser Firefox, tweeted a simple reminder on December 31 that it accepts crypto donations (it has since 2014) the backlash was so ferocious—including from a Mozilla co-founder—that it paused Bitcoin donations.

If it’s not the marketing that pisses them off, it’s companies launching NFTs. In the past month, GSC Game World canceled plans to integrate NFTs into its game “S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl” after backlash, and Discord backed away from a MetaMask Ethereum wallet integration after its core users, mostly gamers, revolted.

Bitcoin’s abysmal start to the year has also set off a predictable chorus of victory lap headlines and tweets about how crypto is too volatile, it’s all a scam, and so on.

Bitcoin hit its 13th anniversary this month. After 13 years of trading, why do the same skeptics hate it with as much passion, if not more, than the early days? They’ve heard crypto is killing the environment, or it’s a Ponzi scheme to prey on gullible investors. Others are simply turned off by what they think embodies crypto culture: HODL bros in Miami and drooling Bored Ape owners who don’t know what real art is.

At Decrypt, we disagree. We don’t dispense investment advice, and most of our writers own very little crypto. But I like to say that at the very least, we believe the technology is fascinating. I find that most of the people who dismiss crypto out of hand just don’t understand it—and don’t want to learn.

So, what might change their minds? Price growth isn’t doing it: Bitcoin rose from a fraction of a penny to nearly $70,000 and people still roll their eyes. Widespread adoption by banks, hedge funds, and consumer brands isn’t converting hearts and minds.

The arrival of Ethereum 2.0, which will move to a proof-of-stake mechanism that should use far less energy, might help address the environmental complaints. The continued rise of NFTs with actual use cases—in games, as membership passes, as proof of attendance—might convert some doubters.

But it will probably take real-world everyday uses, beyond just price speculation, to force some people to acknowledge crypto is real. Perhaps it will be an innovation from the “Web3” boom in decentralized media, DAOs, or digital workplace tools that will impress normies.

As for the companies facing immediate backlash when they announce crypto or NFT plans, Decrypt‘s Jason Nelson has a suggestion for them (watch the roundtable above): “Stop telling everybody what you’re doing.” Put your heads down and launch the thing, without the drumroll, and let your users decide if they like it.

The new sounds of “tolerance, peace and prosperity” that come from the Gulf are often treated with suspicion –  a cliche aimed at obfuscating the newfound autocratie in the region.  However, while slogans might be cheap – actual changes made on the ground should be noted.  The United Arab Emirates moral education curriculum reform is telling of the vision that the country’s leaders have for the future. Beside bolstering schools with state of the art technological and infrastructural backgrounds and offering the most up-to-date scientific knowledge as part of current curricula, teaching values to students has been a key part of this shift. The message is clear. Moral values are just as important in the long-term development of the country as material improvements made.

As The Institute for Monitoring Peace and Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se)—a leading authority in educational research which analyses school curricula across the Middle East—revealed, the UAE has effected significant positive change since 2010 to promote values of acceptance, empathy, and non-violent conflict resolution in its public schools. Moral education was first being promoted by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai and the Vice President of the UAE, as part of the “UAE Vision 2021” national agenda. Today, it also features among the priorities of the UAE’s “Vision 2030” plan for the building of a “highly skilled, highly productive workforce.”^[1]

Moral education and the promotion of values of peace are strategically important for the Emirates. As for its domestic environment, the UAE is among the most ethnically diverse nations of the world. A staggering 88.5% of its population is made up by an expat community, whose members come from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Iran, Egypt, China, and numerous other states.^[2] In the long run, the country will have to tackle the difficult and sensitive issue of equal rights for all, including expats and non-citizens. The educational system seems to have taken the initial steps on this long road. Undoubtedly, keeping this diverse amalgam together as one functioning nation requires a great deal of ideological cohesion and direction. Evidencing the UAE’s success on this front, however, is the fact that it has consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world, and even attained the second spot^[3] in recent rankings.

Achieving a peaceful society that embodies the values of tolerance and cooperation seems to facilitate the UAE’s domestic as well as foreign objectives alike. As detailed by IMPACT-se’s  report, the UAE’s moral education curriculum spans 12 grades and provides theoretical as well as practical knowledge to students, emphasizing the value of multiculturalism, encouraging respect and empathy for others—be it strangers within the UAE or nationals of other countries—as well as providing empirical skills of conflict resolution. Students in the UAE between the ages of six and 18 not only learn about the importance of tolerating the differences between themselves and others, and respecting people regardless of their nationality, race, gender, religion or social status, but also receive practical tools that can help them resolve interpersonal conflicts in the future.

This type of so-called values education^[4]—besides traditional education that teaches about social, scientific and historical knowledge—influences how people develop as moral human beings, and what they consequently consider positive norms and behaviours. This should not be understood in an abstract and subjective sense alone. Education has multiple benefits, including important economic ones. Tolerance, acceptance and cooperation have an economic utility by ways of building stronger societies.

This is something that the United Nations has also recognized as part of its Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 4, pertaining to education, encompasses many different aspects. Beyond the base goal of achieving universal primary and secondary education for all by 2030^[5], the development goals also take note of attitudes of global citizenship as an important prerequisite of building a sustainable future. Respect for human rights, gender equality, an appreciation for cultural diversity, and the promotion of the dual goals of peace and non-violence are all listed as furthering the creation of a more equal and more efficient world economy.

The UAE has been among those spearheading efforts to transform the Middle East, a region that has been ravaged by multiple decades of economic inefficiency, military interventions, wars, civil wars and other internal strife.

As the first in the Arab world to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel in almost three decades, the UAE has provided additional proof that it is not interested in peace on a merely rhetorical level, but is willing to back up its statements by concrete action. While Israel had peace treaties in effect with Egypt and Jordan since 1977 and 1994 respectively^[6], they can only be characterized as a “cold” peace. In contrast, the relatively recently concluded normalization agreements between the Jewish state and the UAE—as well as the Arab states of Bahrain and Morocco—are based on more proactive and enthusiastic intentions. People to people programs between universities and other institutes of further education will be instrumental as part of these efforts.

Education is one facet of the UAE’s overall strategies of working towards its own development goals. As stated in the forth principle for UAE’s recently launched 50 year plan:“Developing the educational system, recruiting talent, retaining specialists and continuously building skills will be key to ensuring the UAE remains the most competitive national economy.” As already seen in the classrooms, this vision is not just material. “World peace lies in respecting and accepting the contradictions between us” states a moral education book for grade 6. The association between moral education, tolerance and economic prosperity offers a  refreshing approach to a challenging issue in the Middle East. The lead taken by UAE will hopefully serve as a model for others to see and adopt.

Crows can remember human faces associated with stressful situations for up to five years and they’ll also warn their friends, a study has found.

Crows are known for their extraordinary smarts and have been observed making tools to dig food out of tight spots.

Now a five-year study by scientists at the University of Washington has found they possess an unusually good memory for human faces linked to a stressful event.

The researchers donned a caveman mask before trapping, banding and releasing wild crows at five sites on or near their campus in Seattle, Washington.

They then observed how the crows reacted when approached by someone wearing the caveman mask and compared it to the reaction prompted by a control mask – in this case, a mask depicting the face of former U.S. vice president Dick Cheney.

While the Cheney mask drew a muted response, the caveman mask prompted rounds of angry squawking and flapping, not only from the birds previously captured but also from crows that had witnessed the initial trapping.

At one of the five sites, 20% of crows reacted angrily to the caveman face shortly after the trapping. After five years, the proportion of crows reacting to the caveman face was recorded at 60%, suggesting that word had spread among the flock that this was a dangerous face.

“Independent scolding by young crows, whose parents had conditioned them to scold the dangerous mask, demonstrates vertical social learning. Crows that directly experienced trapping later discriminated among dangerous and neutral masks more precisely than did crows that learned through social means,” said the paper, which was published in the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.

“People have suspected for a long time that crows are very smart and have very good memories. And they certainly recognise people,” said Dr Stephen Debus, a bird expert and honorary research associate in zoology at the University of New England.

“They hide food and come back and find it later, they can make tools like hooks and spikes to catch food or for digging. They are very adaptable.”

Dr Debus, who was not involved in the study, said birds like crows and cockatoos had highly evolved brain capacity and methods of communicating with each other.

“They have a lot more intelligence than people give them credit for,” he said.

One of the scientists involved in the University of Washington study, John Marzluff, was quoted saying that he was approached in the past by the U.S. military about training crows to find al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, who was killed earlier this year.

“They have a long term memory, very acute discrimination abilities, and if a group of crows knew bin Laden as an enemy, they would certainly indicate his presence when they next saw him,” Professor Marzluff said.

Aside from tropical cyclones, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, bushfires, droughts, and armed conflict are experienced by many people worldwide.

And when disasters strike, people suffer from sickness, injuries and many other hardships, so they need whatever help they can get.

Stronger-than-expected international migration lifted Canada’s population by 82,000 in the first quarter, the
fastest quarterly increase since the pandemic began, a report by Royal Bank of Canada said.

The report attributed this to the  federal government’s strong push for new permanent residents, with most of the increase accounted for by people already temporarily living in the country. There was also a significant increase in temporary residents that kept pace with the outflow of those transitioning to a more permanent status.

New study permits issued increased 21,000 (44%) year-over-year, and new post-graduate work visas increased by 24,000 (160%) in the first quarter of 2021. This is good news after seeing Canada’s international post-secondary student population fall by 60,000 in 2020.Even with strong growth in the early months of 2021, the pandemic amounts to a lost year in terms of Canadian population growth.

Year-over-year growth was 0.4%. The natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) was just 6,400—the lowest level in recorded history—as a result of both population aging and COVID-19 related loss of life. Even as COVID-19 subsides, the natural increase is likely to continue to decline into the future leaving immigration to make up the shortfall. This puts even more of a spotlight on the federal government’s execution of its immigration plan.

DJIBOUTI: Just a few kilometres from the centre of the capital city of Djibouti, experts are giving final touches to what is tipped to be the second  largest mosque in the country.

The initial idea of Masjid Al Rayan originated in the need for providing a place for worshipers who had to vacate their original neighbourhood in an old district of the capital. However, thanks to personal interest and generous funding by businessman and philanthropist Mohamed Said Guedi, the scope of the project has only expanded.

A model of Masjid Al Rayan

The majority of Nassib’s inhabitants had start a new life as they lost their homes to a massive fire in the old inner part of the capital in 2017, destroying over 200 properties.  Displaced and distressed, they did deserve a wider, cooler place where they could not only pray but also reorganise their community life. Answer to their prayers could not have been better than a beautiful mosque, equipped with modern facilities.

The rapid development associated with the mosque has since brought benefits such as a paved road, a power line with public lighting and a water supply system. The city has also benefited from both physical and social infrastructure, and in the midst of these developments one piece of architectural beauty that is destined to stand-out is Masjid Al Rayan.

A piece of land spread over five thousand square meters was provided by the Ministry of Welfare WAQF and the project included construction of a mezzanine floor with a total surface of 1 460 square meter that can accommodate 1,000 men in the main hall and 400 women at the mezzanine level.

However, Al Rayan is not only a place of worship,but offers a school facility , accommodations for the employees of the mosque and shops. It was the intention of the donor to ensure that the mosque becomes the heart of this community.

The double-domed design, supplemented by giant chandeliers and a 21.5-meter high minaret is inspired by the great Fāṭimid mosques of Cairo—Al-Azhar  and Al-Ḥākim with the latest technologies with luxury settings.

Al-Rayan was designed in the traditional hypostyle plan with axial cupolas.

Since its inception, Guedi, who is also the Chairman of MSG Group of Companies, has always taken deep interest in the progress of his project as it is  close to his heart.   Be it the design or construction stage of a beautiful commercial block attached to the mosque, sanitary work for ablution, or the parking facility, Guedi has always kept himself informed of the progress and financial requirements of the project.

As the third stage of the project is starting in Djibouti , Mohamed Said Geudi is already preparing a twin structure that will be based in the same architectural design as Al Rayan mosque in Hargeisa, Somaliland.  The Hargeisa mosque will be even bigger and have nearly double the capacity of Al Rayan.

As a part of his many charitable contributions in the region of the Horn of Africa, Mohamed Said Guedi has funded various road projects such as Dawga Camuud and Dawga Caad, maintenance of Hargeisa Airport road, maintenance of Hargeisa local government roads, rehabilitation of Doobo mountain road, and reconstruction of roads in the district of Dar es-salam outside Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Valletta, Malta: The Government of Malta is seeking greater ties with the Gulf countries and India, in order to accelerate its economic growth, highest among the European Union countries, a top official said.

The country is also expected to make the best use of the World Expo 2020 in which it is preparing a three-pronged strategy to promote its culture, economy and heritage through government-to-government, business-to-business and business-to-consumer engagement, Mr Carmelo Abela, Maltese Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion, told a visiting media delegation from the Gulf region.

“We are fully committed to the World Expo 2020 that will take place in Dubai and we see this as a great opportunity to promote our country and tourism,” Mr Carmelo Abela said. “As a country, we have so much to offer and we would utilise this opportunity to showcase our attractions through the Expo 2020.

“Our pavilion at the Expo 2020 will have a three-way engagement with the people – including government-to-government, business-to-business and business-to-consumer – in order to position ourselves as a major tourism destination.

“At the government level, we would use the Expo 2020 platform to attract foreign direct investment to Malta, while the business-to-business engagement will focus on promoting Maltese products market and the business-to-consumer engagement will be to promote tourism into Malta.

“We are working on a number of tourism products to attract visitors to Malta.

“As a peaceful country, we promote peaceful solution to any conflicts. We are concerned with the growing distrust in the Gulf and hope all parties could solve the differences through dialogue. We believe, sitting across the table and discussing issues is the best way to solve problems,” he said.

On the escalating global trade war, he said, “We are against trade wars. Trade could only grow through cross-border cooperation.”

Meanwhile, Malta is strengthening economic relations with India. Maltese Prime Minister Dr Joseph Muscat visited India in January this year and met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said, over the last two years, Malta and India strengthened bilateral ties. India has recently set up its high commission following a series of high-level bilateral visits and meetings.

“Over the last two years, we led a large business delegation to India to invite them to invest in our country while our business community also explored mutual business interests with Indian counterparts,” he said.

“This was followed by a visit by Indian President and the opening of Indian High Commission in Malta. In the coming years, we expect our relationship to grow in socio-economic areas.”

Malta is also expanding its diplomatic missions across the world, including Japan, Morocco, Ghana and some other countries.

Mr Abela said, his country is seeking greater foreign investment in Malta. “We are asking international companies with regional headquarters in the United Kingdom, to co-relocate their European base to Malta, in order to continue their operation across Europe,” he said.

“Being part of the British Commonwealth, we will lose an important partner. However, Maltese laws are based on English Common Law and English is widely spoken in Malta. Companies will shrink their operations in the UK, could relocate greater resources to Malta and continue to do business in the UK and EU – without having to go through much difficulty.”

The IMF recently upgraded the global growth outlook for 2018, and the oil price is trading at its highest levels since 2015. These are both positive developments for the UAE economy, which is expected to see an uptick in growth in 2018. But will this be the beginning of a sustained period of growth, or will it just be a rebound from the recent slump in growth?

The IMF has raised its projections for GDP growth in the UAE to 3.4 percent in 2018, up from 1.7 percent in 2017. This is just below the growth of 3.5 percent forecast for the region.

The lower oil price over the past few years may turn out to be a blessing in disguise in the long term. It is forcing policymakers to diversify away from historical dependence on oil.

|By Arabian Post Staff| Cancer tumours manipulate a natural cell process to promote their survival suggesting that controlling this mechanism could stop progression of the disease, according to new research by the Universities of Birmingham and Oxford.

Non-sense mediated decay (NMD) is a natural physiological process that provides cells with the ability to detect DNA errors called nonsense mutations. It also enables these cells to eliminate the mutated message (decay) that comes from these faulty genes before they can be translated into proteins that can cause disease formation.

NMD is known among the medical community for the role it plays in the development of genetic diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis and some hereditary forms of cancers. But not all nonsense mutations can elicit NMD and, until now, its wider impact on cancer was largely unknown.

Biomedical researchers and computer scientists from the Universities of Birmingham and Oxford developed a computer algorithm to mine DNA sequences from cancer to accurately predict whether or not an NMD would eliminate genes that had nonsense mutations.

The work originally focused on ovarian cancers, and found that about a fifth of these cancers use NMD to become stronger. This is because NMD ensures that the message from a gene called TP53, which ordinarily protects cells from developing cancer, is almost completely eliminated. In the absence of NMD, a mutated TP53 might still retain some activity but NMD ensures that this is not the case.

Based on this research, the team predicts that because cancers essentially feed on NMD, they become dependent on it, in some cases. If scientists were therefore able to inhibit or control the process, it is possible that they could also control cancer and prevent the progression of the disease.

Co-author of the paper, published today in Nature Communications, Dr Ahmed Ahmed, of the University of Oxford, said:“Our first observations of evidence of the role of NMD in ovarian cancer were tantalizing. We found that NMD precisely explained why there was almost no expression of TP53 in certain ovarian cancers.

“We went on to test the role of NMD in other cancer types and the evidence of the role of NMD was compelling. This opens the door for exciting possibilities for customised treatments including individualized immunotherapies for patients in the future.”

Following the ovarian cancer analysis, the team expanded the study to include other cancer types. They analysed about a million different cell mutations in more than 7,000 tumours from the Cancer Genome Atlas covering 24 types of cancer.

The team was able to map how each cancer type used NMD revealing the remarkable extent to which NMD helps cancer to survive.

Moving forward the team will focus on testing their theory and understanding to what degree stopping the NMD process allows them to control tumours.

Co-author Dr Christopher Yau, of the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences at the University of Birmingham, said: “As a result of these findings, we now plan to apply the same computer algorithm to determine if NMD affects cancer patients in The 100,000 Genomes Project. These investigations may pave the way to new treatment possibilities for NHS patients in the future.”

Katherine Taylor, CEO of Ovarian Cancer Action, which part-funded the research, said: “This is very exciting news. The team has identified how cancer cells rely on a process called NMD for their survival. This discovery could help clinicians identify and inhibit the process, giving them much better control of a person’s cancer.

 “Ovarian cancer is a very complicated disease and survival rates are low, with only 46% of women living beyond five years after diagnosis. So understanding how we can prevent the disease from thriving is imperative if we are to improve the outcome for more women.

When Nicolaus Copernicus proved in the 16th century that the earth actually revolved around the sun, he did more than inflict a breathtaking blow to the human ego. He threw a new paradigm into the atmosphere. Soon brows began to furl with questions around the way that society was configured; if the earth itself was not the centre of the universe, then what other so-called divine doctrines of institutional authority rendered review?

Suddenly the same old pills around the supremacy of kings, queens and popes didn’t go down as smoothly; the world began to wake up and see the possibility of something far more inclusive and empowering.

 Similarly, within the business world a Copernican revolution is underway. Those at the top are not necessarily the central source to which workers are gravitationally pulled. Quite the contrary, those traditionally on the fringes are moving to the organisation’s centre and new workplace dynamics are interrupting historical rules of engagement.

The future workforce is becoming more a case of ‘skills on tap’, collaborating across corporate lines to cull interdisciplinary knowledge. All of this is dumping traditional management structures into a serious identity crisis, leaving the question to hang in the air, ‘who deserves to lead us from here?’

The emphasis needs to sway from top down management to leadership. If we want our organisational structures to overcome their innovative inertia and breed break-out thinking, we need to focus on collaboration over control, casting direction over cementing hierarchies. Managers as we know them, are dying. Our problem is that many don’t know it yet and those that do are in self-preservation mode and trying to hold down/hold back the next generation.

In doing so, they risk bringing down the organisation that they are trying to manage.

 An enemy to innovation

What words tend to go hand in hand with the concept of ‘management?’ Archaic? Stale? Stifling, perhaps? Management conjures up images of pointed fingers over cubicle rows – scores of anonymous employees under the supervised eye of a superior.

The classic picture of a factory line is the appropriate context in which the concept finds its roots. With the rise of the industrial revolution came the demand for streamlined, scalable production of manufactured goods – standardised processes that relied on regulated workflows and quality control systems. Efficiency and consistency were the name of the game, and people were tossable commodities, in the effort to squeeze maximum outputs out of minimal inputs.

But today’s economy is fuelled by knowledge flow, creativity and the ability to think. Ability and aptitude are no longer cut-and-paste credentials that require strict oversight; even those who are not classified as knowledge workers are required to make on-the-spot smart decisions that respond to rapidly changing business climate conditions. Organisational agility is now a company’s bread and butter to survive a digitally disruptive world.

The reality is, in spite of the tremendous need for flexibility, organisations are still suffering from managerial arthritis. Traditional management styles foster hierarchy and division of labour, and knowledge is clustered and contained under the collective banner of ‘social capital’. All of it is incomprehensible to the current language of collaboration and knowledge sharing. With systems still stuck in a 19th century industrial mindset, there’s no room for relationships of trust and cooperation to develop. There’s no opportunity to butt heads, to add perspective, to panic well, and to push through together when bureaucracy keeps you in boxes.

A new leadership ethic

Managers have historically added the best value by ensuring their people stick to the rules. Rules, processes and procedures are needed (particularly in big companies) so as to avoid chaos and to ensure that each person knows their part in the play. This also enables a product (or service) to be repeated and a consistency of quality to be achieved.

Paradoxically, however, these same rules and procedures that underpin quality also limit creativity, innovation and exploration of the new. Large companies are fixated on rules and procedures, and then penalise hard anybody who breaks them. What they should be doing is finding ways to constantly upgrade their rules to so that they constantly build a better product. Their rules and procedures need to be in a semi-rigid state of flux – not too rigid that they can never be changed, but not so lose that there is no consistency.

Managers hate this. They want consistency. They want the rules to be followed. They want order. The new leader is one who can understand the difference between rigid and semi-rigid and the difference between flexible and non-existent. They can understand the notion of continuous improvement and continuous deployment, where those rules and procedures are constantly being upgraded by the people who are intended to follow them (because if they upgrade them themselves, then they are likely to follow them).

The architect-builder

Gary Hamel notes that if we’re going to get serious about tackling our core organisational incompetencies, “we have to start by scrutinising the architecture and ideology of modern management—two topics that aren’t often discussed in boardrooms or business schools.” We have to reimagine a new type of leader that is both architect and ideologist; a reformer in both the tangible and intangible of today’s unique animal known as innovative culture.

Lead with caution, controls and reams of red tape; and watch your ship go down. Celebrate mistakes, take risks and invite collaboration; and expect success. Today’s organisational leaders must be able to envision this social ecosystem and then to build it, one solid and inclusive decision at a time.

The capacity to architect and articulate high performance spaces is one thing. The resourcefulness to implement them is another – instilling systems, rituals and processes, and promoting rich communication and continuous redesign along the way. Traditional management held lines of protocol and status quo, but current leadership demands a more nimble and pioneering business approach that is willing to unlearn for the sake of reinvention.

At the end of the day, a new leadership paradigm is in order. It is one that adds empathy to expertise and trades directives for dialogue. Whether this is a suggested upgrade to the concept of management, or an overhaul of the concept altogether, is a still up for debate. But one thing is clear; radical change is needed. Otherwise, as Peter Drucker reminds us, “If leaders are unable to slough off yesterday, to abandon yesterday, they simply will not be able to create tomorrow.”

Who ever said ‘happily ever after’ was just the stuff of fairytales?

These days those words are written into the soles of Lionel Messi’s cleats. (Or at least, that’s the idea.) The “Sport Infinity” range by sports apparel company Adidas uses worn-out cleats and, by combining them with scrap materials from other industries, reimagines them into high quality new shoes. “The football boots of the future could contain everything from carbon used in aircraft manufacturing to fibres of the boots that scored during the World Cup,” Adidas said in a statement.

It’s called infinity recycling – one of the many good ideas wrought by circular economy thinking – and it may just be the Sunday game norm someday.

 With three billion new middle-class consumers expected to enter global markets in the next 15 years, we can expect three billion more hungry appetites for the resources and infrastructure required to meet their lifestyle demands.

Currently, our economy is run by a ‘take-make-dispose’ linear approach that generates a breathtaking amount of waste. According to Richard Girling’s book Rubbish!, 90% of the raw materials used in manufacturing don’t even make it out the factory doors, while 80% of products made are thrown away within the first six months of their life cycle. The resource crunch is more like a suffocation, with our incriminating fingerprints all over the planet’s throat. The extractive industry’s approach is unsustainable – raw materials are being depleted quicker than they can regenerate.

 The circular economy may be a highly practical solution to our planet’s burgeoning woes. The idea behind a circular economy is to rethink and redesign the way we make stuff. Rather than ditching your worn-out old jeans, send them into the factory for recycling and upgrade to a new pair. Done with your old iPhone 5? Reconsider buying the Puzzlephone, which can be easily disassembled, repaired and upgraded over a ten-year lifespan.

In the circular economy, products are not downgraded, as they are in recycling, but reimagined to infuse the same, if not more, value back into the system. Basically, there’s no such thing as waste in a circular system – all waste bears the raw materials to become something else. By finding fresh, creative ways to use the same resources, a one-way death march to unsustainable collapse is inadvertently avoided.

Could we halt the downward spiral by using waste to solve the waste crisis?

With McKinsey rolling out projections as high as $1 trillion to gain from a closed-loop economy, circularity seems to have our ‘thumbs up’ in principle. The truth is however, we are a far cry from adopting its practical reality in our design-distribution streams. So how will we get there? If the circular economy is indeed the way of the future, what needs to change now to usher it in? Could the circular economy define the end of the extractive industry as we know it?

We have to believe in a new buying power

The Kingfisher Group has much to say on the future shift in consumerism, and they’re using power tools to say it. Rather than buying that drill that is used on average six minutes in a year, why not rent it for the day? Surely it would be better value for money on that rare occasion when a hinge is loose?

Their company, along with others like Mud Jeans and Philips, are paving the way for new ideology and design around products and how we relate to them. Consumerism is moving to stewardship, with the emphasis on service over product acquisition. So, in other words, the ‘pay per use’ contractual agreements associated with smartphones could extend to washing machines, DIY equipment or even Levi jeans. Access, not ownership, to a product will be the new trading power. This will launch fantastic new intelligent systems to undergird the process.

But it will firstly require a good deal of unlearning and open-mindedness for us who have been immersed in linear thinking.

We have to up our game

Within the former linear structure, sales were the success markers. Manufacturing and design simply had to align just enough to make the product sparkle, shine and ultimately sell. They didn’t have to consider the total fossil fuel emission of production or its biodegradability in landfill. The product’s recyclability was not in question. It was only the swipe of the credit card.

A circular economy, however, is really complex. It accounts for a product’s entire life cycle in its design. Systems-level redesign and skills we haven’t yet imagined will be needed in order to recall, repair and reincarnate products into an upgraded former self. Rapid innovation will generate IoT platforms and seamless technologies into new services and product offerings.

The need for ongoing research and development will drive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) disciplines. We need to prepare for these complexities, so that the added layers of life cycles are anticipated in tomorrow’s briefs and an egg-on-face situation is narrowly averted.

We have to collaborate

Circular solutions will only realise sustainable, future-proofed ecosystems if everybody is on board. Perhaps even more important than the engineers and designers, governance and regulation are crucial in endorsing these processes. Redesigning supply chains and business models require robust round-table discussions between businesses, universities, social groups and policymakers.

Initiatives such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Circular Economy 100 embraces this idea that closed-loop ambitions can never be achieved by working in isolation. This group ties together supply chain leaders, industries and geographies. From designers to academics, CEOs to city mayors, people are locking heads and sharing their complementary expertise. The result of which is a more effective and holistic solution that generates wins for both the planet and our pockets.

Linear thinking can’t meet the needs of the emerging circular economy. However, all is not lost. Draw a straight line long enough and it would actually envelop the globe, paradoxically making a circle. What we need is linear thinkers to be open-minded to extrapolate their thinking out far enough in order to, ultimately, draw the same conclusion – that a circular approach is actually where all roads lead. Going forward, drawing circles around our consumer behaviour may be the best way to draw the line.

UAE. In the GCC, healthcare, industrials & materials and financial services have recorded the largest fluctuations in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity, despite the gradual decline witnessed by the industry since 2014.

According to research published today in The Boston Consulting Group’s (BCG) 2016 M&A Report, Masters of the Corporate Portfolio, companies that regularly acquire and divest businesses as part of their corporate strategy consistently outperform less active dealmakers in terms of shareholder return in the medium and long term.
 
While M&A deals are not setting records in terms of the volume of deals across the GCC, which recorded 46 deals since the beginning of 2016, there has been a definite increase in deals in certain sectors. 17% of the recorded deals were in the medical sector, while services and consumer goods accounted for 13% of M&A deals respectively, and 9% of the deals occurred in financial services.
 
“We have noticed an overall 2% increase in deal value between 2014 and 2015, despite the 26% decrease in the number of deals,” said Ihab Khalil, a Partner and Managing Director at BCG Middle East.

“The number of deals recorded since the beginning of 2016, potentially indicates a further decline in the total number of deals to be expected. However, looking at global trends, this decline could be temporary, as the view of M&A acquisitions is changing. BCG’s 2015 M&A report confirmed that companies that do their homework and practice disciplined post-merger integration can indeed acquire their way to growth in both earnings and shareholder returns.”
 
This new BCG report, which was prepared in cooperation with Paderborn University, compares three types of dealmakers—portfolio masters, “strategic shifters,” and “one-timers”—using BCG’s proprietary database of more than 54,000 M&A transactions since 1990. Portfolio masters represent only 6% of the companies in the sample (1,339 companies), yet they accounted for almost 14,000 deals, or about 25% of global M&A volume over the past 25 years.
 
Strategic shifters are companies that frequently rebalance their portfolios through M&A; they are involved in two to four transactions over a five-year period. One- timers made only one acquisition or divestiture each over a five-year time window. But, with a combined count of 18,891 deals since 1991, they represent 35% of total M&A deals globally.
 
But one year after the deal announcement date, portfolio masters clearly outperform, as measured by relative total shareholder return (RTSR), a company’s total shareholder return compared with its sector index. Portfolio masters generate an average one-year RTSR post announcement of 4.1%—more than 1 percentage point higher than one-timers.

Even more significant, portfolio masters generate their returns at significantly lower share-price volatility (36% standard deviation of RTSR as compared with 50% for one-timers), exposing investors to the lowest level of risk of all three types of dealmakers.
 
The research also shows that companies can increase their returns for shareholders by moving up the M&A ladder, from one-timer to strategic shifter or portfolio master. For example, the 37% of one-timers that moved up to strategic shifters generated a one-year RTSR of 4.5%.

The 16% of strategic shifters that moved up to portfolio master status generated average one-year RTSR of 4.8%. By comparison, one-timers or strategic shifters that stayed in place or moved down the M&A ladder generally saw minimal or even negative RTSR as a consequence.
 
“For the typical CEO, M&A is a once-in-a-lifetime activity. But those that approach deal making as an industrial process create an advantage for their shareholders,” said Khalil.

UAE. Middle East businesses embracing digital transformations in order to gain business advantage and drive innovation are being warned to place digital trust and cyber security at the heart of such change.

The advice has been issued by two new senior experts in IT, digital transformation and cyber security appointed by PA Consulting Group Middle East and North Africa as part of an aggressive recruitment phase to bolster client capabilities in the region.

Farrukh Ahmad, selected to head up the cyber security team at PA Consulting MENA has joined the technology, innovation and consulting firm from Vodafone. He has advised businesses in the region to pay close attention to their technology ‘exposure window’, where organisations are vulnerable to internal and external entities accessing services, data or systems.

“The biggest mistake an organisation can make is not to embed security functionality from the onset,” he said from PA’s Dubai office.  “By entrenching digital trust and cyber security from design, to build and deployment, the protection will correctly cover the risks, be less costly, and provide a secure foundation upon which additional business services can be offered.”

Digital transformations are not optional for businesses in today’s climate and the speed of digital disruption is increasing. 

Ian Grannan, who joins PA to lead the MENA technology and digital services team following his tenure at Etihad Rail, highlights international and regional success stories such as Apple, Amazon, Uber, Careem, and Souq.com. These are brands which have driven their own revolutions, while others such as Blockbuster and high street retailers have disappeared completely. 

Ahmad and Grannan, together with their growing team of IT, digital and cyber experts are urging organisations to adapt or die, but also to ensure cyber security is placed at the heart of transformation.

Grannan said: “Digital transformations that do not change, improve and encompass underlying business processes lead to disjointed, inefficient services that will never be able to compete with digital-native competitors.

“The opportunity that digital transformation provides for most businesses is huge and those businesses that embrace that opportunity will be the future leaders and heralded as successful case studies in five to 10 years. It is essential, however, that organisations underpin that transformation with a robust digital trust and cyber security strategy.  Companies want to become household names, but not for the wrong reason.”

Both experts agree that the risk not to change is too high, but that employees and senior leadership must understand that digital transformation is a business transformation, with cyber security acting as a core bedrock.

Ahmad added: “An integrated approach requires a pervasive culture of security within an organisation.  This starts with having clear organisational policies and standards which will ensure a consistent approach to embedding digital trust and cyber security in all systems, including the digital transformation that will power your businesses into the future.

“Organisations should also consider how they can leverage newer security technologies such as mobile authentication, shared ledgers, digital signature based workflows, and cloud access security brokers. These security technologies can allow organisations to introduce new business services using commodity public services, knowing that they are highly scalable, secure and cost effective.”

Low natural gas and electricity prices have created a tough competitive environment for renewable energy, but this has remarkably had little impact on the momentum of alternative energy growth, finds a new Deloitte report entitled, “Alternative Thinking 2016: Five game-changers that are powering the future of renewable energy.”

The report identifies the important trends and opportunities in the renewable energy industry. It also presents “what if” scenarios that may propel the renewable power sector forward, outpacing current projections.

“Alternative energy is at a tipping point,” said Salam Awawdeh, Partner and Middle East Energy & Resources Leader at Deloitte in the Middle East.

“The growth we have seen over the past few years since we last published the report is now ready to be propelled forward as a result of these game-changers. Especially in the Middle East, Solar friendly policies across all parts of the solar value chain (investors, solar developers, construction contractors and technology manufacturers) have contributed enormously to  solar industry growth in many jurisdictions; Jordan, UAE and Egypt amongst others.

Enthusiastic effort is invested in realignment of relevant energy strategies as many were considered when Brent crude exceeded $105 per barrel, and  emphasis was put on the lower cost-recovery tariffs guaranteed by technologies such as renewables, oil shale or nuclear.

The large drop in oil prices, if sustained, would considerably reduce generation investment cost recovery. And a spell over effect, it may reduce the opportunity cost of switching away from traditional fossil fuels, and make some technologies almost cost-comparable to traditional ones ― at least in the short term.”

According to the report, the convergence of forces driving renewable energy forward has created a momentum that is likely irreversible for the industry. These five game-changers include:

– Regulatory reform and public policy support: Far-reaching regulations at global, national and local levels are driving increased adoption of renewable energy. This includes the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference as well as adoption of state and provincial regulations to protect the environment.
– Corporate commitment: A significant number of large global companies have launched a movement to generate all of their energy from renewables in the next two decades. In the U.S. alone, 58 leading multinational corporations have signed on to the Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles1, an initiative that aims to make renewable energy easier for companies to procure at a large scale.
– Financing innovation: Investors now understand renewables as an asset class and are more confident in investing in them, while new financing vehicles have lowered the cost of capital and improved access to it. Giving companies the opportunity to reduce their tax burdens bolsters the trend of corporations investing in renewables by making the overall financial proposition even more attractive.
– Energy storage: Energy storage technology is advancing and making renewable energy more viable by eliminating the issue of intermittency.
– Grid integration: Once the nemesis of utilities, a host of new technologies are quickly making integration of intermittent power sources into the electricity grid a problem of the past. With the capability to manage electricity flows in different directions, the system operators have the ability to manage production and supply in real-time.

Though the traditional barriers of cost, intermittency, and grid integration are still present, they are not seen as deal-breakers in the long run, according to the report.

“Growing pains are inevitable, but they are surmountable for renewable energy,” Awawdeh added. ”First-movers such as Denmark, Germany, China, the UK, the US and Spain have addressed them, and the results of recent regulatory initiatives suggest that many other nations now believe it is necessary to do so. This indicates that perhaps alternative energy has not just entered the mainstream, but is quickly becoming the norm itself.”
