Netflix And Other Streaming Services Will Launch On Nintendo Switch 'In Time'

Even though the Nintendo Switch is flying off of shelves, many gamers are disappointed that the home and portable gaming console doesn’t include support for Netflix and other streaming services.

But all that is about to change—in time.

President and COO of Nintendo of American Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that streaming services could launch on its console in the future.

The reason why support for Netflix and the others was not a feature included on the console is because Nintendo just simply didn’t see it as something of utmost importance that would further set it apart from other gaming consoles.

“We built the Nintendo Switch to be a world-class gaming device, meaning we want you first and foremost to play games on the system and have an incredibly fun experience,” Fils-Aime told The Washington Post. “We’re talking to a range of companies about the services, companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon—things that will come in time. In our view, these are not differentiators.”

This comment kind of gives Switch users a more concrete answer as to whether or not they will be able to stream movies and TV series on the console. Previously Nintendo stated that support for streaming services was only something that was in consideration.

Instead, Nintendo is currently putting all its focus on games.

“What differentiates us is the way you play with the Nintendo Switch and what you can play,” he said. “And that will continue to be our focus into the future as we continue driving this platform.”

Despite being Nintendo’s fastest-selling console ever in both the U.S. and Europe, many have criticized the company for its less an impressive lineup of games that are available to play.

But Fils-Aime stated that the company is concentration on games that will have long-term success on the platform to provide a range of experiences for games. That simply couldn’t be accomplished at the time of Switch’s launch.

“We were very deliberate in wanting to make sure, from a Nintendo publish standpoint, that we had a steady cadence of great games in addition to strong titles at launch,” he said.

Fils-Aime also stated that along with Netflix and other streaming services, the Switch could see other tablet functions, including having a Web browser in the future.
