Abu Dhabi court jails two men for joining terror groups

Two men were convicted on Wednesday by the Abu Dhabi Court of Appeals for joining terrorist organisations and promoting their ideologies, state news agency WAM reported.

A third was convicted for illegally possessing firecrackers.

The court sentenced a Comoros national, identified as AHA, to three years in prison for possessing firecrackers without obtaining a licence from the authorities and fined him AED1,000.

The court also ordered that the material be confiscated. According to the judgement, he will be deported after serving his jail term.

An Egyptian citizen, identified as SSM, will spend three years behind bars for joining a terrorist group and promoting its ideas. The court ordered confiscation of the material and equipment used in the offence.

The court also sentenced a third suspect, an Emirati identified as KAH, to one year in jail. While pronouncing the sentence, the court took into consideration the fact that the 22-year-old Emirati had voluntarily abandoned the terrorist group, WAM said.
