Abu Dhabi Launches ‘Medeem’ Initiative to Promote Emirati Values in Marriage

The Department of Community Development in Abu Dhabi (DCD) has launched a new initiative, “Medeem,” aimed at encouraging young Emiratis to embrace traditional values, prioritize financial planning, and have simpler, more affordable weddings. The initiative falls under the umbrella of the Abu Dhabi Family Wellbeing Strategy, which seeks to strengthen family units as the foundation of a stable society.

Medeem’s name reflects its core purpose. Derived from a traditional Emirati congratulatory phrase that translates to blessings for ongoing happiness and contentment, the initiative embodies the vision of the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. By offering guidance on various aspects of marriage, from pre-marital arrangements to setting up a home, Medeem seeks to equip Abu Dhabi citizens with the tools necessary to navigate the marital journey successfully.

Financial considerations are a key focus of the initiative. Statistics show that a significant portion of couples in the emirate exceed their initial wedding budget. Medeem aims to address this trend by promoting responsible spending habits and encouraging couples to prioritize financial stability in the long term. This includes guidance on budgeting for weddings, managing debt, and financial planning for married life.

Beyond finances, Medeem emphasizes the importance of traditional Emirati values in fostering strong marriages. The initiative highlights the significance of open communication, mutual respect, and shared responsibilities within a marriage. Educational workshops and resources will be made available to equip couples with the necessary skills to navigate challenges and build a foundation for a lasting and fulfilling relationship.

The launch of Medeem reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to social well-being and strengthening family units. By promoting responsible financial planning, traditional values, and open communication, the initiative empowers young Emiratis to embark on a successful married life, contributing to a more stable and cohesive society. The initiative is expected to be well-received by young Emiratis seeking guidance and support as they plan for their future.
