CachyOS Unveils Custom Kernel Builder for Debian-Based Systems

CachyOS, an Arch Linux-based distribution renowned for its performance optimizations, has introduced a kernel builder tool tailored for Debian-based systems. This development aims to simplify the process of creating custom kernels, offering users enhanced control over their system configurations.

The CachyOS Kernel Builder is a text-based user interface utility that automates the configuration and optimization of Linux kernels. It provides advanced options, including LLVM’s Link Time Optimization , tick rate adjustments, and CPU scheduler selections. Users can also customize kernel names and configure parameters such as Least Recently Used memory management and kernel preemption types.

The initiative to adapt this tool for Debian-based distributions was spearheaded by the Nitrux Linux development team. After seven months of dedicated effort, they successfully ported the CachyOS Kernel Builder, making it accessible under the 3-Clause BSD license. This collaboration underscores the open-source community’s commitment to cross-distribution compatibility and user empowerment.

To utilize the CachyOS Kernel Builder, users should clone the repository from GitHub, make the script executable, and follow the on-screen prompts to configure and build the kernel. The tool is designed to detect CPU architecture automatically, applying optimizations specific to the user’s hardware. It also offers a range of configuration options, such as enabling or disabling CachyOS-specific optimizations, selecting CPU schedulers like Cachy or PDS, and configuring system parameters like Hugepages and NR_CPUS.

This development is particularly significant for users seeking to enhance system performance through tailored kernel configurations. By providing a streamlined and user-friendly approach to kernel customization, the CachyOS Kernel Builder empowers users to optimize their systems effectively.
