China persuades fugitive graft suspect to return in "Operation Skynet"

BEIJING China has persuaded a fugitive suspected of graft to return home as part of “Operation Skynet” that seeks to capture corrupt officials who flee abroad, the top graft agency said on Thursday.

Zhang Jun, the former general manager of Shanghai Sports Investment Management Co Ltd, fled to Australia in 2014 under suspicion of corruption, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) said in a statement on its website.

The commission did not specify any charges against Zhang and it gave no details about when he came back to China and what will happen to him.

Operation Skynet is part of a crackdown on corruption launched when President Xi Jinping took power four years ago.

The commission said this month it would tighten measures against illegal moves of capital and people abroad.

Earlier on Thursday, the ruling Communist Party said the fight against corruption had gained “crushing momentum” and it would not let up next year.
