Dubai man arrested with almost 1,000 prescription drugs

DUBAI // An Asian man was arrested with almost 1,000 prescription pills after being told to sell them by his brother, who is serving time in Dubai’s central jail for drug dealing.

Colonel Eid Mohammed Thani Hareb, director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics at Dubai Police, said that the suspect, GAFH, 29, admitted dealing psychotropic substances.

“The unemployed suspect, who is married, decided to follow in the footsteps of his brother instead of finding noble work to make an honourable living,” said Col Hareb. “The suspect’s brother, AAFH, is known to be involved in drug activity. Dubai Police had also recently arrested him for dealing and abusing drugs.”

Col Hareb said GAFH was arrested on July 20 in Al Quoz.

“Police found different kinds of pills in the suspect’s bedroom in a house in Al Quoz as well as a large amount of money that he admitted was the earnings of his drug [business],” said Col Hareb.

“The suspect was able to obtain the drugs, which are harmful to the mental and physical health of people, through smuggling operations. Such pills are prescribed only to those who need it and their sale is monitored by the Health Ministry.”

Dubai Police said an electronic system monitors the prescription and sale of drugs to spot any malpractice from doctors, pharmacists or anyone concerned with the medical industry.

Col Hareb said GAFH’s case was transferred to public prosecution.

He urged people to cooperate with the authorities and call the free hotline 800400400 if they suspect anyone of being involved in drugs.
