DUBAI // A policewoman who stole money from a wallet left behind by a passenger at Dubai International Airport was jailed for three months on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Emirati officer was seen picking up a wallet from lost property on August 5.

“Her job is to search travellers, looking for any suspicious stuff,” said a 36-year-old Emirati policeman in court at an earlier hearing. “There is a box for any items passengers misplace.”

He said it was his job to investigate, so he checked CCTV cameras.

“I saw she opened the wallet and took cash,” said the officer. The policewoman was arrested on August 8 and admitted taking US dollars and changing them into dirhams at an exchange house in the airport.

“She said the amount came to Dh2,000.”

The female officer admitted to breach of trust and embezzlement charges to police and prosecutors but denied them when she appeared in court.

At Dubai Criminal Court on Wednesday, the policewoman was sentenced to three months in jail and fined Dh2,000.
