Emirati teens in Ajman injured in explosion after 'inhaling gas'

AJMAN // Two Emirati teenagers in Ajman sustained burn injuries when compressed gas they had been inhaling exploded in their vehicle, police said.

The teenagers, ages 17 and 18, were using the gas to refill their lighters and inhale the gas in their vehicle while it was running and parked in front of a shop in Al Jurf area of Ajman, police said.

Lt Col Ali Al Shamsi, director of Ajman Police stations, said the incident was reported after the vehicle’s windows suddenly shattered after the compressed gas caught fire.

“A police patrol from Al Hamidiya Police Station rushed immediately to the incident scene and found that the vehicle’s windows were totally smashed,” Lt Col Al Shamsi said.

“Some parts of it were damaged and the two youths were injured because the car was filled with gas when it was completely closed.”

The teens were initially taken to Khalifa Hospital in Ajman. One, who had sustained second-degree burns to his face, was transferred to Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

The other teenager sustained minor burns on his arms and legs, and has left hospital, said Lt Col Al Shamsi.

The facades of some shops located across from where the explosion took place were damaged.

Lt Col Al Shamsi said the young men admitted that they were inhaling gas inside the car by refilling the lighters.

He urged the public to be cautious when using flammable materials.
