European Airports Hit by Cyberattack Disruptions

A cyberattack that compromised the MUSE software of Collins Aerospace has caused delays and cancellations at several of Europe’s busiest airports, including Heathrow, Berlin Brandenburg, and Brussels. The disruption has affected electronic check-in and boarding systems, forcing manual processing and straining airport operations.

The attack, which targeted a service provider used by multiple airlines, has resulted in subdued automated systems at these airports. Heathrow warned of potential delays for departing passengers while Brussels confirmed flight cancellations and Berlin reported longer wait times at check-in. Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of RTX Corporation, acknowledged a “cyber-related disruption” affecting some of its software installations and said it is working to restore full functionality.

Airports impacted say the system failures are limited to functionalities such as electronic check-in, baggage drop, and boarding. These tasks are now being handled manually, which has increased operating difficulties. Brussels noted that only manual processing is currently possible for check-in and boarding. Berlin’s airport management stated that the issue stems from a system provider operating across Europe, and that passengers are experiencing extended queuing times.

Heathrow’s advice to travellers is to confirm flight status with individual airlines before reaching the airport. The airport has also asked passengers not to arrive more than three hours in advance for long-haul flights, or two hours for domestic ones, and deployed extra staff at check-in to help manage queues. Brussels described the impact on its flight schedule as “large,” citing both delays and cancellations.
