Family of man who died due to botched surgery request increased compensation

ABU DHABI // The family of a man who died after undergoing surgery at a hospital in Al Ain will have to wait to find out how much compensation they are entitled to.

Before his death, the man sued Tawam Hospital in Al Ain for Dh7million in 2013, alleging an unqualified surgeon, W H, botched a bladder operation, leaving him with a clogged artery and intestinal gangrene.

He then became impotent, his urinary system was disabled and he lost the ability to walk.

He died before the First Instance Court verdict on the case was announced, and his heirs were granted Dh2 million in compensation.

They have since appealed the verdict, arguing that the compensation they received did not take into account the fact that the man was the sole breadwinner for the family.

The case has been referred back to the appeals court for re-evaluation.
