PARIS Failed French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen’s niece Marion Marechal-Le Pen, a National Front member of parliament, will not stand for re-election in June’s legislative elections and is to stand down as the party’s southeastern region president, French media reported on Tuesday.

Le Figaro reported that the 27-year-old, who is one of only two National Front lawmakers in the outgoing parliament and one of the best known figures in the party, had decided to stand down for personal reasons.

Party officials did not immediately confirm the information. Senior party official Bruno Gollnisch told reporters it was on the cards.

“I think it’s in the works, but I will let her announce it if she wants to,” he said.
