DUBAI // A man stabbed his room-mate in the stomach for saying that he wanted to have sex with the accused’s wife.

The incident, in the early hours of New Year’s Day, occurred when the two Indians got into an argument celebrating New Year’s Eve drinking alcohol at their accommodation in Al Qusais.

“He told me he wanted to have sex with my wife, we argued and I pushed him. Then I held a knife just to scare him but he ran towards me and got injured,” said the 40-year-old defendant.

The injured man, 42, told the Dubai Criminal Court his room-mate was drunk when he came into their room at 1.30am on January 1.

“He picked up my phone and smashed it, then started kicking my bed. I didn’t say or do anything because I didn’t want any trouble,” said the victim, who claimed that his compatriot then walked towards him, pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the abdomen.

“I don’t know what happened. I woke up at the hospital,” the victim said.

A 29-year-old from Nepal told the court he had been celebrating with the two men but left them alone for a while. When he returned, he found the victim bleeding on the floor. “I called police immediately.”

The defendant was arrested five hours later.

He denied a charge of assaulting the safety of a person when he appeared in court. A verdict is due on December 15.
