Man stabbed roommate to death for turning on light, Dubai court hears

DUBAI // A man was stabbed to death by his roommate because he turned on the bedroom light and disturbed him, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said that at about 10pm on April 9 Indian F K, 29, victim M Y, also Indian, and a third roommate, R R, were in their accommodation in Dubai Investments Park preparing to sleep when a fight broke out.

“F K turned off the light and went to bed but M Y, for some reason, turned on the light again,” said Indian driver S M, 23. “F K turned it off, and, again, the victim turned it on. This happened a few times before the two engaged in a fight.”

The driver said R R came running to him and said F K and M Y were fighting. By the time they arrived at the room they found the victim bleeding from a chest wound and spitting blood, while F K sat on his bed.

Emirati policeman S G, 20, said he found the victim’s body on the floor in a pool of blood with a stab wound to the chest. “I found bloody footprints and followed them to find the defendant standing alone near some trees behind the accommodation,” he said.

A forensics report showed M Y, whose age was not given, had been stabbed once in his right lung. F K was unable to enter a plea due to the lack of a translator.

The next hearing will be August 30.
