DUBAI // A man who was sentenced to three months in jail on charges of insulting his wife in front of the couple’s son has won a suspended sentence.

Dubai Criminal Court sentenced the Dominican husband, 44, after finding him guilty of insulting his wife. However, he was acquitted from physically assaulting and threatening to kill her.

Charges of insulting the husband were not raised against the wife, also Dominican, 41, in court.

The incidents happened between June 20 and 23 last year but the woman called the ports police station on June 28.

She told police that she reported him after he beat her up, and insulted her using foul language.

“He told me he would kill me if I told police about him beating me up,” said the housewife.

Their 10-year-old son witnessed the verbal abuse and told prosecutors that he heard his father saying he would go to his mother’s family and kill them after he killed her. “Then I heard my mother’s screams and a loud bang,” said the boy.

The man won the suspended sentence at the Dubai Court of Appeal on Thursday and will now be deported.
