ABU DHABI // A woman who attempted to rob a money exchange shop using a toy gun was sentenced to a total of seven years and two months in prison on Monday morning.
Abu Dhabi Criminal Court sentenced the Filipina A L, 33, to seven years for attempted robbery and two months for breaching the UAE’s residency laws. The sentences will run consecutively.
Police, as part of their investigation, released CCTV footage of the woman. This spread quickly across social media.
A L confessed to the court she planned the robbery to pay off her debts, believed to be Dh140,000. The woman carried out the attempted robbery on the same day she came up with the scheme, the court was told.
She bought an abaya, a black face veil and a Dh25 toy gun. She wore gloves to hide her fingerprints.
A L will be deported after completing her sentence. An appeal against the verdict is expected to be lodged by A L’s lawyer.
