Palestinian Hunger Striker Is Freed, Then Detained Again

JERUSALEM — A Palestinian man who waged a 55-day hunger strike in prison to pressure the Israeli authorities to release him was detained on Monday, just a day after he was freed. The man, Khader Adnan, 36, was stopped after he tried to enter the walled Old City of Jerusalem to worship at the Al Aqsa Mosque on the holiest night of Ramadan, Jawad Boulus, his lawyer, said.

Micky Rosenfeld, a spokesman for the Israeli police, said that Mr. Adnan did not have permission to enter Jerusalem and that he was being held for questioning.

Mr. Adnan emerged as a potent symbol of resistance to the Israeli occupation for fasting at length, years apart, to demonstrate against being incarcerated indefinitely without formal charges. Most recently, Mr. Adnan was freed on Sunday after warnings by the Red Cross and Palestinian authorities that he could die if he continued his hunger strike.
