Perception of Credibility Favors Voice Agents Over Wikipedia

Evaluations of information sources have highlighted a striking trend in how credibility is assigned to various platforms. A study published in Nature’s Scientific Reports reveals that individuals perceive information from voice-based agents like Amazon Alexa as more credible than that from Wikipedia, even when the content is identical. This finding challenges the long-held belief in Wikipedia’s reliability as an information source, particularly against the backdrop of the increasing use of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT.

The research, which involved 1,222 participants, set out to assess the credibility of information delivered through three formats: a voice-based agent, a dynamic text-based agent (representing tools like ChatGPT), and a static text-based online encyclopedia akin to Wikipedia. Participants were presented with six questions covering a range of general knowledge topics, including safety tips when encountering wildlife, the risks associated with smoking hookah, and historical facts like the Titanic disaster. Each question had both accurate and partially inaccurate responses, mirroring the type of information users might encounter online.

In the first phase of the experiment, the participants were presented with branded versions of each platform, which included distinct logos and taglines, such as “Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia.” This branding was removed in the second phase to neutralize any potential bias stemming from familiarity with the platforms. Despite the identical nature of the presented texts, the results indicated significant variations in perceived credibility based on the medium through which the information was delivered.

Participants rated the accuracy and trustworthiness of the information, revealing that the voice-based agent consistently received higher credibility scores compared to the static Wikipedia format. Notably, even when the content was factually accurate, responses from the voice-based agent were seen as more trustworthy. This finding underscores a critical shift in public perception regarding where and how information is consumed, suggesting that the delivery method plays a significant role in shaping audience trust.

The implications of this study are profound, particularly for the Wikimedia Foundation, which has long championed Wikipedia as a superior source of information. Historically, Wikipedia has positioned itself as a reliable alternative to emerging AI-driven technologies.
