TORONTO –

Malaysian police plan to closely monitor serial rapist Selva Kumar Subbiah when he begins the return flight to his homeland Sunday but say he is a “free man.”

A report in the Malaysian Star quotes Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar saying police will use “existing jurisdiction and authority” to keep an eye on Subbiah, who has finished his 24-year sentence for drugging and sexually assaulting dozens of women in the Toronto area in the late 1980s until caught in 1991.

“We will be there to record his statement but he is a free man,” the Malaysian police officials said. “We will also request for all of Selva Kumar’s criminal records from the Canadian authorities.”

Subbiah has been in the custody of Canadian border officials under an immediate deportation order since his release from prison Sunday.

He had attempted unsuccessfully to stay in Canada permanently.

Brian Thomson, a retired Toronto Police officer who with partner Peter Duggan busted the phony modelling agent, is among those concerned that Subbiah will reoffend.

“I’ve met a lot of interesting people. He is the scariest I’ve ever met,” Thomson has said.

Parole authorities refused to spring him early from prison after concluding that he showed no empathy for his many victims and was indifferent to treatment.

A Toronto Sun request for an interview was turned down by Subbiah.
