Ras Al Khaimah Charts Independent Course in Energy Development

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is actively pursuing a diversified energy strategy to meet its future needs. The emirate’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Strategy 2040 aims to achieve 30% savings in electricity consumption, 20% savings in water consumption, and a 20% contribution from renewable energy in the supply mix, compared to a business-as-usual scenario.

A key component of this strategy is the promotion of solar energy. The Solar Program encourages the use of solar power for electricity generation and heating applications, encompassing both on-site and utility-scale projects. In line with these efforts, RAK has set an ambitious target of installing 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity, divided equally between rooftop installations and large-scale utility projects.

In addition to solar initiatives, RAK is exploring other renewable energy sources. Électricité de France (EDF) has announced plans to develop a 5 GW pumped-storage hydropower plant in the emirate. This project is expected to enhance energy storage capabilities and contribute to grid stability, aligning with RAK’s sustainable energy goals.

The emirate is also focusing on improving energy efficiency across various sectors. The Energy Management Program promotes systematic energy management practices, such as ISO 50001, among high-energy users. Furthermore, RAK is targeting the retrofitting of 3,000 buildings by 2040 to enhance energy performance, with plans to retrofit 40 buildings in the current year.

In the realm of traditional energy resources, RAK Gas, the state-owned entity, is conducting an active exploration campaign for new oil and gas reserves in collaboration with international partners. This initiative underscores the emirate’s commitment to maintaining a balanced energy portfolio that includes both conventional and renewable sources.

To support these initiatives, RAK has been engaging with various stakeholders through platforms such as the RAK Energy Summit. The summit serves as a venue to showcase pivotal projects, including high-efficiency desalination plants and water conservation efforts, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable development.
