ABU DHABI // The woman accused of murdering a teacher in a Reem Island shopping mall bathroom has had her case adjourned to allow her lawyer more time to prepare.
Alaa Al Hashemi is accused of murdering American Ibolya Ryan in Boutik Mall in December. The 30-year-old Emirati is also accused of trying to murder another family by placing a bomb outside their flat.
On Monday, Mrs Al Hashemi’s lawyer, Abdulqader Al Haithami, asked the Federal Supreme Court for more time to prepare his defence.
He asked that his client be referred to Al Amal Hospital in Dubai to have experts prepare a report into her medical condition. An earlier report deemed her mentally fit to stand trial.
The prosecution argued against the request for a second evaluation and said that Mr Al Haithami had had a lengthy period to request another referral.
Judge Falah Al Hajeri rejected a request for a second medical test, but agreed to give the defence lawyer more time.
He noted that the charges Mrs Al Hashemi faced had been amended to “the deliberate and aggressive murder of the victim with premeditation and stalking”.
The case was adjourned to June 15.
