Harmonix, the developer behind the Rock Band franchise, and Hasbro, the company behind several popular trading card games such as Magic: The Gathering, are teaming up for a music mixing trading card game.
Named DropMix, the game will be made available in September this year.
‘DropMix’: The Music Mixing Game
DropMix, as described by Harmonix in its announcement, is a fast-paced music mixing game that allows players to create unique mixes through cards featuring songs from popular artists.
“It’s completely unlike anything else you’ve ever played and we hope it will give you that same deep connection to your music and your friends that our previous fan favorites like Rock Band or Dance Central have offered,” Harmonix stated.
DropMix being a unique game is certainly an appropriate description. Once the game is released, it will include an electronic DropMix board and 60 DropMix cards. Each card represents different parts of songs such as the vocals and the drums, and once placed on the DropMix board, will use near-field communication technology to be combined into a custom mix that will be played in real-time through an app on an Android or iOS device.
Harmonix first introduced Clash Mode, which is a 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 mode that will have players or teams race to 21 points. Points are scored by playing cards, but it is not yet clear what the rules of the game will be and how players will score points.
Harmonix also revealed that players will have the option to save the mixes that they create in DropMix to their device so that they can play them back whenever they want to.
The Music Featured In ‘DropMix’
DropMix will come with 60 DropMix cards, with Harmonix claiming that there will be more than 300 DropMix cards released for the year, covering different genres.
Some of the music that will be featured in DropMix this year include “Take Over Control” by Afrojack, “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars, “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen, “Closer” by The Chainsmokers, “Heartbeat” by Childish Gambino, “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire, “Sing” by Ed Sheeran, “Centuries” by Fall Out Boy, “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5, “Sexy And I Know It” by LMFAO, “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor, “Chandelier” by Sia, “Bangarang” by Skrillex, and “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd.
While it may be difficult to imagine how songs of different genres can mix well with each other, according to Harmonix, everything will sound good. Apparently, this is true, as reported by CNET’s Scott Stein who tried out the game.
‘DropMix’ Price Tag
The DropMix Music Gaming System, which contains the DropMix board and the first 60 DropMix cards, will cost $100. Playlist Packs, each of which will contain 16 DropMix cards, will be sold for $15. There will also be Discover Packs, each of which contains five DropMix cards, also with a $15 price tag.
The additional DropMix cards beyond the first 60 will be released over the year once the game is released, and will allow players to start a collection that will lead to new and unexpected music mixes every time they play.
