Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed calls Algerian prime minister

ABU DHABI // Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed recalled Algeria’s patriotic struggle for independence in a phone call to the country’s prime minister.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs spoke with Abdelmalek Sellal on Wednesday, reported Wam, the state news agency. Sheikh Mansour discussed the historical and fraternal relations between the countries as well as the strong relations between President Sheikh Khalifa and Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

The countries’ “common destiny pillar” was laid by Founding Father Sheikh Zayed, said Sheikh Mansour.

He stressed the UAE’s appreciation of relations with Algeria and its keenness on developing them. He also recalled the “patriotic struggle and legendary resistance” of Algerians to achieve independence, during which “nearly 1.5 million martyrs gave their lives for the country”.

He also spoke of the historic leaders that led Algerian resistance until the liberation of their country, Wam reported.

Algeria marked its Victory Day on March 19. The Algerian struggle for independence is referred to in the Arab world as “the war of the one million martyrs”.
