The campaign team of candidate Anies Baswedan has claimed to have found more than 29,000 people in West Jakarta who cast votes illegally in the first round of the Jakarta gubernatorial election.

According to the team’s research, 28,853 people voted using invalid data, including some who were not registered as Jakarta residents, while 477 others voted more than once using different identification cards.

M. Taufik, a member of the campaign team, said on Monday that, as the second round of the election was going to be held soon, the Jakarta Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) must pay serious attention to the fix voter issues.

“Otherwise there will be an allegation that the KPU committed a gross violation in running the election,” he told reporters during a press conference.

During first round of the election, Anies’ rival, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, took West Jakarta by securing almost 50 percent of the votes, while Anies and the third candidate, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, tailed in second and third place.

“If the KPU takes side, it is more than an election violation, it’s a crime. If that was true we will file a police report,” he continued.
