UAE and Italy advance strategic economic partnership

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai

Rome hosted high-level talks between the United Arab Emirates and Italy as both sides explored ways to expand economic cooperation and deepen strategic ties across trade, energy, investment and technology sectors. Discussions centred on strengthening an already growing partnership between the Gulf state and one of Europe’s largest economies, reflecting a broader push by both governments to widen collaboration in a shifting geopolitical and economic landscape.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, held talks in the Italian capital with Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The meeting focused on expanding bilateral economic engagement while reviewing political coordination and opportunities for long-term collaboration in areas including energy transition, advanced technology, infrastructure and cultural exchange.

Officials described the discussions as part of an ongoing effort to elevate relations between the two countries beyond traditional diplomatic cooperation towards a more integrated economic partnership. Trade links between the UAE and Italy have strengthened steadily over the past decade, with the Emirates serving as Italy’s largest trading partner in the Gulf region while Italian companies continue to expand their footprint across sectors such as engineering, manufacturing, fashion, construction and renewable energy.

Bilateral trade between the two countries has climbed significantly, reflecting growing demand for industrial goods, energy cooperation and investment partnerships. Italian exports to the UAE include machinery, industrial equipment, luxury goods and technology systems, while the Emirates supplies energy products and serves as a regional logistics hub for European companies operating across the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

Energy cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. Italy has pursued diversified energy partnerships following disruptions in global supply chains and geopolitical shifts affecting traditional gas sources. The UAE has emerged as a key partner in this strategy through investment in energy infrastructure and the expansion of renewable energy projects led by Emirati companies across Europe and the Mediterranean region.

Italian officials have also shown interest in deeper cooperation with the Emirates in hydrogen technology and clean energy development, sectors increasingly viewed as central to long-term energy security strategies across Europe. Emirati investment entities and energy companies have been expanding partnerships in renewable power generation, hydrogen production and sustainable infrastructure projects that align with Europe’s climate transition policies.

Economic collaboration extends well beyond energy. Italian manufacturing groups view the UAE as a gateway to markets across the Gulf and wider Middle East, while Emirati sovereign wealth funds and investment companies have increased exposure to European industries including infrastructure, technology, healthcare and financial services. Analysts say the relationship benefits from complementary economic strengths: Italy’s advanced industrial base and engineering expertise paired with the UAE’s capital resources and strategic geographic position.

The Rome talks also addressed cooperation in innovation and emerging technologies, an area gaining increasing prominence in the diplomatic and economic agenda of both countries. Artificial intelligence, digital transformation and advanced manufacturing were discussed as fields where joint research and investment could generate long-term economic value. Both governments have promoted innovation-driven growth as part of national economic diversification strategies.

Diplomatic engagement between the UAE and Italy has intensified as governments seek stable economic partnerships amid global uncertainty, supply chain disruptions and evolving security challenges. Italy has placed increasing emphasis on strengthening ties with Gulf economies as part of its wider Mediterranean and Middle East strategy, while the UAE has expanded diplomatic outreach to European partners in pursuit of diversified trade and investment relationships.

Security and regional stability also formed part of the dialogue. Officials reviewed developments affecting the broader Middle East and Mediterranean regions, with both sides emphasising the importance of diplomacy, economic development and international cooperation in addressing geopolitical tensions. The UAE has played a visible role in diplomatic initiatives aimed at promoting stability across the region, while Italy remains an active European participant in regional dialogue and peacekeeping initiatives.

Economic diplomacy has become a central element of the UAE’s foreign policy as the country positions itself as a global hub for finance, trade and innovation. Strategic partnerships with European economies are seen as a crucial component of this approach, enabling the Emirates to attract technology investment, expand trade routes and deepen collaboration in sectors critical to future economic growth.

Italian policymakers, meanwhile, view the Gulf as an increasingly important economic partner. Italian companies have established a strong presence in infrastructure development, transportation systems, architecture and design projects across the Emirates. Major Italian firms have participated in large-scale developments ranging from transportation networks to energy infrastructure and industrial facilities.
