DUBAI // The main site for the UAE Food Bank was announced on Monday after the first meeting about the new charity initiative.
The bank’s main branch will be in the Dubai Vegetable Market, while 15 other outlets are planned for inside and outside the UAE.
Sheikha Hind bint Juma Al Maktoum, Chairwoman of the Food Bank, said it is hoped that it will become the “biggest food-aid initiative yet seen in the Muslim world”.
A total of 85 hospitality companies and more than 100 supermarkets have signed agreements with the UAE Food Bank since it was announced last week by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, as part of the Year of Giving.
Hussain Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality and deputy chairman of the food bank, said it had received “tremendous support”.
Majid Al Futtaim Group, Carrefour, Choithrams, Dubai Trade Centre and Jumeirah Hospitality are among the organisations participating, and Dubai Municipality and the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Initiatives Foundation are overseeing its operations.
The aim of the UAE Food Bank is to reduce food waste and provide food to the needy. As part of its first campaign, it will distribute 30,000 meal packages to people in need.
