UAE Takes Lead in GCC Olympic Committee Discussions

DOHA, Qatar (2024-05-30) – The United Arab Emirates emerged as a frontrunner for fostering collaboration amongst Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations on Olympic matters during a recent meeting held in Doha. Rashed bin Humaid, President of the UAE National Olympic Committee, headed the Emirati delegation that participated in discussions with their GCC counterparts.

The core objective of the meeting was to solidify cooperation and coordination between the GCC Olympic Committees on a broad range of sports-related issues and Olympic endeavors. A significant portion of the dialogue centered on preparations for forthcoming regional and international sporting events, including the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, and the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

The UAE delegation emphasized the significance of collective efforts to propel sporting achievements across the GCC region and provide athletes with the necessary support to maximize their potential. The discussions culminated in a consensus amongst the GCC Olympic Committees to maintain open communication channels and pursue ongoing collaboration.

This meeting comes at a time when the GCC nations are placing increasing focus on developing their sporting prowess on the international stage. The UAE, in particular, has invested heavily in sports infrastructure and athlete training programs in recent years. The country hosted the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games and is actively bidding to host future major sporting events.

Bin Humaid’s leadership at the GCC Olympic Committees meeting reflects the UAE’s growing prominence in the regional sporting landscape. The collaborative efforts championed by the UAE delegation hold promise for propelling sporting achievements across the GCC nations and fortifying the region’s presence at international sporting events.
