Zahid says all component parties should help each other out, especially during the next general election.

Zahid-HamidiKUALA LUMPUR: Other Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties must work as hard as Umno, says the party’s acting deputy president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid said he had met with the presidents of BN component parties to discuss this and was confident that a “huge change” would happen soon.

“I have urged the other component parties to work as hard as Umno and I am sure they will,” he said at a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre here today.

He said they were told to not only work hard in the areas they would likely contest but also in the seats that other BN candidates would contest.

Many expect the general election to be held next year.

Zahid, who is also Bagan Datoh MP, added that he had instructed Umno communication chiefs to work with other parties within BN to galvanise their machineries to face the general election.

“I have asked (them to do) this to make sure we have a united front.”

He was asked to comment on MCA president Liow Tiong Lai’s statement that the responsibility for obtaining non-Malay support fell on the BN collectively and not just the respective component parties.

Liow had said this in response to Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun’s speech at the Umno general assembly.

Khairul had warned BN component parties to play their part in winning back non-Malay support, especially the support of the Chinese who were leaning towards the DAP.
