Emergency Committee Convenes to Assess Bird Flu Threat

The Emergency Committee Secretariat convened today in Bengaluru to assess the ongoing threat of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. This follow-up meeting comes amidst heightened concerns due to recent outbreaks in neighboring states.

The committee, comprised of representatives from various government departments including health, agriculture, and environment, reviewed the latest reports and discussed the implementation of preventative measures. A key focus of the discussion was the effectiveness of biosecurity protocols at poultry farms across the state.

“Biosecurity remains our primary line of defense against bird flu, ” stated Dr. Amita Rao, the committee’s designated spokesperson and Director of Animal Husbandry for Karnataka. “We are urging all poultry farmers to strictly adhere to established protocols, which include routine disinfection of premises, proper disposal of carcasses, and restricting access to unauthorized personnel. “

The committee also emphasized the importance of public vigilance. Dr. Rao advised citizens to report any unusual bird deaths or suspected cases of bird flu to the nearest veterinary authority. Early detection and swift containment measures are crucial in preventing the spread of the virus, both within poultry populations and potentially to humans.

The meeting addressed concerns regarding the potential economic impact of an outbreak. The poultry industry plays a significant role in Karnataka’s economy, and a large-scale outbreak could result in job losses and disruptions to the food supply chain. The committee is working closely with the Department of Agriculture to develop contingency plans to mitigate these risks.

While acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, the committee assured the public that they are taking all necessary steps to safeguard public health and the state’s poultry industry. Ongoing surveillance efforts are being intensified, and additional resources are being allocated to support biosecurity enforcement measures.

The committee will continue to meet regularly to monitor the situation and adapt its response as needed. They have pledged to keep the public informed of any significant developments and emphasized the importance of collective action in tackling this potential threat.
