Abu Dhabi Energy Services Unveils Major Solar Project

Abu Dhabi Energy Services (ADES), a subsidiary of TAQA (Abu Dhabi National Energy Company), has launched the largest solar project in the UAE’s education sector. The initiative, in collaboration with UAE University (UAEU), marks a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to enhance sustainability and reduce carbon emissions in academic institutions.

The project involves the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on multiple buildings across the UAEU campus in Al Ain. This development is set to generate approximately 8.2 MW of renewable energy, which will significantly reduce the university’s reliance on traditional power sources. The solar systems are expected to cover up to 30% of the university’s electricity needs, leading to substantial cost savings and a considerable reduction in carbon footprint.

Jasim Husain Thabet, Group CEO of TAQA, highlighted the importance of this project for the UAE’s sustainability goals. He emphasized that this venture aligns with the country’s vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and reflects the broader commitment of ADES to promote renewable energy solutions across various sectors.

The implementation phase, which commenced in early 2024, is expected to be completed by mid-2025. During this period, more than 14,000 solar panels will be installed on the rooftops of campus buildings, car parks, and other structures. The project also includes the installation of a sophisticated energy management system to monitor and optimize energy use.

Dr. Ghaleb Al Hadrami Al Breiki, Acting Vice Chancellor of UAEU, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that it represents a significant step towards transforming the university into a model of sustainability. He noted that the initiative would not only provide financial benefits but also serve as an educational tool for students and faculty, offering practical insights into renewable energy technologies and their applications.

ADES has engaged leading solar technology providers and contractors to ensure the highest standards of quality and efficiency. The company has also emphasized the importance of minimizing disruptions to the university’s operations during the installation process. As part of the project, ADES will provide training for UAEU’s facilities management team to ensure the long-term maintenance and efficiency of the solar PV systems.

This solar initiative is part of a broader strategy by ADES to expand its renewable energy portfolio and support the UAE’s clean energy transition. The company has been actively involved in various projects aimed at increasing the adoption of solar energy across the emirate, contributing to the national targets set by the UAE Energy Strategy 2050.
