AI Search Engines Mislead Users with High Error Rates

The study evaluated eight prominent AI search tools, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search, Google’s Gemini, Perplexity, DeepSeek Search, Grok-2 Search, Grok-3 Search, and Microsoft’s Copilot. Researchers conducted 1,600 queries, each designed to assess the tools’ ability to accurately identify news articles based on provided excerpts. The findings were startling: over 60% of the time, these AI models failed to retrieve correct information. Perplexity, the most accurate among them, had a 37% error rate, while Grok-3 Search was incorrect in a staggering 94% of cases.

This high rate of inaccuracy is particularly concerning given the growing reliance on AI search tools. Nearly one in four Americans now use AI-driven insights instead of traditional search engines. Unlike conventional search engines that direct users to external websites, AI tools often generate responses by synthesizing information internally, potentially limiting users’ access to original sources and diverse perspectives.
