This is the first time Spacey will host the event, which will take place in New York on June 11. Recent hosts Neil Patrick Harris, Hugh Jackman and James Corden all won raves from critics but apparently were unavailable to do the honours again this year.

“I was their second choice for Usual Suspects, fourth choice for American Beauty, and 15th choice to host this year’s Tony Awards,” Spacey joked. “I think my career is definitely going in the right direction. Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down,” he added. Spacey, 57, is himself a Tony winner for Lost in Yonkers and he currently stars in the Netflix political drama House of Cards. He also served for 10 years as artistic director of London’s Old Vic theatre company. — Reuters
