JTI earns global top employer status

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai

JTI has secured its Global Top Employer certification for 2026, marking another year of recognition for its workforce policies and signalling steady gains in employee engagement, leadership development and workplace culture across its international operations.

The tobacco and nicotine products group, which operates in more than 70 markets, said the renewed certification reflects year-on-year improvements in areas ranging from talent acquisition and career progression to diversity, equity and inclusion. The accolade is awarded by the Top Employers Institute, which assesses organisations against a detailed set of benchmarks covering human resources strategy, work environment, learning, well-being and ethical practices.

Company executives described the 2026 recognition as evidence of sustained investment in people and organisational standards. Senior leadership pointed to expanded training programmes, stronger internal mobility frameworks and updated benefits structures as central to the progress recorded over the past year. Internal surveys, according to the company, showed higher levels of employee satisfaction and retention in several major markets, including Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia-Pacific.

Renewed certification as a global leading employer underscores the company’s stated ambition to position itself as an employer of choice within a competitive consumer goods sector undergoing structural change. JTI, formally known as Japan Tobacco International, is part of the Japan Tobacco Group and has been navigating a broader transformation as the industry shifts towards reduced-risk products and alternative nicotine delivery systems. Such strategic change has increased the emphasis on attracting specialised talent in areas such as regulatory compliance, digital innovation and product development.

Human capital analysts note that employer branding has become increasingly significant for multinational corporations facing heightened scrutiny over corporate governance and sustainability. Companies in regulated industries, including tobacco, are under pressure to demonstrate responsible business conduct and transparent workplace practices. Certification schemes such as Global Top Employer status are often used by corporations to benchmark internal standards against global peers and to strengthen recruitment pipelines in competitive labour markets.

JTI’s leadership has framed its people strategy as integral to long-term performance. Executives have highlighted flexible working arrangements introduced across multiple regions, expanded mental health support initiatives and leadership mentoring schemes aimed at nurturing mid-career managers. According to company disclosures, investment in digital learning platforms has also grown, enabling employees to access skills training remotely and across time zones.

Regional performance has been a particular focus. In the Middle East, where JTI maintains a strong commercial footprint, management has emphasised localisation initiatives and graduate development programmes. In European markets, the company has reported progress in gender balance within management roles, alongside broader inclusion measures. These changes, company representatives said, contributed to improved assessment scores under the Top Employers Institute’s evaluation criteria.

Workforce transformation has coincided with broader corporate shifts. Over the past several years, the Japan Tobacco Group has pursued diversification beyond traditional combustible products, investing in heated tobacco and other reduced-risk categories. That strategic pivot requires new technical capabilities and regulatory expertise, adding complexity to recruitment and retention strategies. Observers say maintaining a stable and motivated workforce during industry transition is a key differentiator among multinational consumer goods firms.

Industry data show that employee expectations have evolved significantly following the global health crisis earlier in the decade. Demand for hybrid working models, stronger health protections and clear career progression has reshaped corporate HR policies worldwide. Companies seeking global certifications are required to demonstrate measurable improvements in these domains, with audits examining documented policies and employee feedback mechanisms.

For JTI, the 2026 certification continues a streak of annual recognitions stretching back several years. Each cycle involves a detailed audit of people practices, with scoring adjusted to reflect updated global benchmarks. The Top Employers Institute has tightened certain assessment parameters, particularly around environmental, social and governance integration within HR policies, according to corporate briefings. Meeting those evolving standards has required incremental adjustments to internal processes and reporting structures.
