Sudhakaran flags mismatch between minister’s looks and performance

MLA G Sudhakaran has sharply criticised the state’s Home Department, declaring that the personal qualities and appearance of Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala cannot compensate for shortcomings in the administration.

The Ambalappuzha legislator described Chennithala as a good person and an admirable political figure but maintained that the department under his charge was performing poorly. His remarks drew a distinction between the minister’s personal reputation and the effectiveness of the government machinery he oversees.

Sudhakaran said there was little point in a minister being fair and handsome if the department he headed failed to function properly. He described Chennithala as a very good man and a great person before delivering his criticism of the Home Department.

The unusually personal formulation underscored Sudhakaran’s dissatisfaction with the department while stopping short of directly questioning Chennithala’s character or intentions. His criticism was directed at administrative performance rather than the minister’s personal conduct.

The comments carry political significance because Sudhakaran, a former CPI(M) minister who now represents Ambalappuzha, has maintained a complicated relationship with both the Congress and his former party. Chennithala, a senior Congress leader, holds the Home portfolio in Kerala’s United Democratic Front government.

Sudhakaran has previously expressed dissatisfaction with police conduct in Alappuzha, particularly over the handling of political protests directed against him. Those complaints provide an immediate context for his criticism of the department, although the precise occasion and circumstances of the latest remarks have not been independently established.

At a public programme in Alappuzha on July 26, Sudhakaran criticised the police in Chennithala’s presence, alleging that officers had failed to alert him about anticipated protests during a municipal function. He argued that the authorities should have informed him beforehand when they were aware of the possibility of disruption.

The legislator also accused certain CPI(M) figures and Congress representatives in Alappuzha of maintaining an understanding that worked against his interests. He called upon Chennithala’s party to end what he described as an arrangement involving local political interests.

Those allegations were directed at political relationships within the district and were not accompanied by publicly established findings demonstrating collusion. The criticism nevertheless illustrated Sudhakaran’s growing willingness to challenge both the administrative machinery and political organisations operating in his constituency.

Chennithala responded to the July remarks by expressing support for Sudhakaran and condemning attempts to insult or intimidate an elected representative. He said democratic politics did not justify humiliating a senior leader through black flag demonstrations.

The Home Minister also said he was unaware of the alleged political understanding between Congress representatives and CPI(M) figures. His response distinguished support for Sudhakaran’s right to political dignity from acceptance of the legislator’s allegations about local political arrangements.

Sudhakaran’s latest assessment of the Home Department raises a separate question about ministerial accountability for the functioning of the police and other agencies under its administrative supervision. His comments suggest that favourable opinions about an individual minister should not determine assessments of departmental performance.

The criticism does not, by itself, establish administrative misconduct or systematic failure. Such conclusions would require examination of specific incidents, official records and the responses of the authorities concerned. Sudhakaran’s remarks represent his assessment of the department rather than an independently established finding about its overall performance.

His relationship with the CPI(M) has also changed significantly. Having served as a minister in previous Left Democratic Front governments, Sudhakaran subsequently faced disciplinary action from the party over his conduct during the 2021 Assembly election campaign.
