Viral Rumpelstiltskin dance traced to AI creation

A viral video showing a sinister-looking Rumpelstiltskin dancing around a frightened woman has been identified as an artificial intelligence creation, ending speculation that the footage originated from a forgotten fantasy film.

The clip, widely circulated on TikTok, Instagram and X, depicts a diminutive, curly-haired figure tiptoeing through a barn filled with straw. Its combination of vintage cinematography, unsettling facial expressions and comic movements has generated widespread attention, while prompting questions about the character’s origins.

The footage was originally published on Instagram on August 27, 2026, through a collaboration involving accounts operated by Stroinaya, Neuroferma and Anna Glinskaya. The production was designed to demonstrate how generative artificial intelligence could recreate the appearance of fantasy films made during the 1980s.

The video gained greater visibility after a TikTok user, identified as @6aimbot9, combined the dancing sequence with American rapper Riff Raff’s 2014 song Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz on September 29. The accompanying joke about strange dreams after taking inexpensive melatonin helped establish the clip as a meme.

The resulting format spread rapidly across social media, with users attaching humorous captions to the character’s exaggerated movements. Others employed artificial intelligence editing tools to substitute different personalities and fictional characters into the sequence.

Confusion about the footage’s authenticity intensified because its visual style closely resembled older fantasy productions. Some viewers suggested that the scene belonged to a Russian film, while others connected it to the 1987 musical adaptation of Rumpelstiltskin.

That production, directed by David Irving, featured actor Billy Barty as the title character and Amy Irving as the miller’s daughter. However, the circulating dance sequence does not appear in the film, and its central figure is computer-generated rather than a human performer.

The distinction has become important because the original footage deliberately imitates the lighting, costumes and grainy appearance associated with older cinema. Its realistic presentation allowed misleading descriptions of its supposed film origins to circulate alongside genuine information about the 1987 production.

The character’s identity has also renewed interest in the darker elements of the traditional German fairy tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm.

The original story centres on a miller’s daughter whose father falsely claims that she possesses the extraordinary ability to spin straw into gold. The king subsequently confines her inside a room filled with straw and demands that she demonstrate this supposed talent.

Facing punishment if she fails, the young woman accepts assistance from a mysterious little man who can perform the impossible task. His initial services are exchanged for her necklace and ring, but a subsequent bargain carries far more serious consequences.

When the woman has nothing left to offer, the stranger demands her firstborn child in exchange for transforming another roomful of straw into gold. Desperate to escape her predicament, she agrees.

After the king marries her and she gives birth, the mysterious figure returns to claim the promised child. He eventually offers her an opportunity to escape the bargain by correctly guessing his name within three days.

The queen ultimately discovers that he is called Rumpelstiltskin, defeating his attempt to take her baby. The tale’s emphasis on coercion, deception and a threatened child contrasts sharply with the playful musical presentation circulating online.

The AI-generated adaptation changes another significant element of the narrative. Rather than demanding possession of a child, its Rumpelstiltskin dances before the woman, transforms straw into gold and receives a kiss that turns him into a handsome prince.

That transformation resembles conventions associated with other fairy tales rather than the conclusion recorded by the Brothers Grimm. The alteration helped create a recognisable fantasy sequence without reproducing the traditional story faithfully.

Social media responses have ranged from amusement to discomfort, with viewers describing the character’s expression and movements as both entertaining and disturbing. Several users have suggested that the figure would make an appropriate Halloween character.

The meme has also produced numerous derivative videos, including versions featuring television characters, online personalities and digitally substituted faces.

The soundtrack remains a defining feature of these adaptations. Riff Raff’s track predates the AI video by more than a decade, but its distinctive rhythm accompanies the character’s tiptoeing movements in the versions that achieved widespread circulation.

The original Instagram production, meanwhile, includes additional narrative scenes beyond the short dancing extract that became the principal meme.
