Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Guide: How To Get The Hylian Shield With Or Without Amiibo

Every fan of the Legend of Zelda series is familiar with the iconic Hylian Shield, a piece of gear that Link has been relying on for many installments such as Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword.

Breath of the Wild is no exception.

Now the Hylian Shield is arguably the best shield in the game. To paint a clearer picture, ordinary shields’ durability typically range from 10 to 50, while the Hylian Shield has a whopping 800 points. More than that, it also has 90 parry power, making it the shield with the highest rating among the brood.

That means you can block plenty of the Guardians’ lasers before it breaks and improve your chances of parrying them and giving them a good taste of their own medicine.

Now, there are two ways to get the Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild — tap an amiibo or make your way to Hyrule Castle.

How To Get The Hylian Shield With Amiibo

First off, using an amiibo is the easy but more expensive way. We’ve already written up a guide on how to get it, but here’s the gist of it: You’re going to need Breath of the Wild Zelda, and from here on out, it’s pretty straightforward — use the amiibo, get a chest to turn up in the game, and open it.

However, it’s not a sure deal, so you might need to keep trying again and again until you’re lucky enough for it to appear.

How To Get The Hylian Shield Without Amiibo

As for the normal but more difficult way, all you have to do is follow these steps:

Step 1: Go to Hyrule Castle, and to get there quickly, you can teleport to the Katah Chuki Shrine — that is, if you got it already.

Step 2: Look for a platform of sorts on the southwest side of the castle, which is on the left of the pillar, and paraglide toward it and swim and climb for a bit to get there.

Step 3: Go down the path going inside, and you should eventually come across a minecart.

Step 4: Ride on the cart and use Remote Bombs behind it to get it going.

Step 5: At the end of the track, go through the entrance leading to another cavern. There, you’ll see a slope lined with torches. Just follow the path or climb on the side of it.

Step 6: Go down the corridor until you find a cracked wall. Use a bomb to break it down.

Step 7: Inside, turn left, another left, and then a right. At this point, you should be in the Lockup.

Step 8: At the end of this path, you’ll see two lit torches with a cracked wall in between. Use a bomb again to make an entrance.

Step 9: Once you go inside, you’ll be in a jail cell. Take out the Calamity Eye with an arrow through the bent bars to open the cell.

Step 10: There are plenty of enemies inside, but you can just take a left and leave them. After that, turn right, and you’ll encounter a Stalnox. Defeat it, and the chest with the Hylian Shield is yours.

For the record, you can buy it again from Granté in Tarry Town if the Hylian Shield breaks.

Breath of the Wild rolled out on March 3 to the Nintendo Switch and Wii U, and it’s available for $59.99.
