Pasqal’s Neutral-Atom Quantum Computing Now Accessible via Microsoft Azure

Pasqal, a French quantum computing startup, has integrated its neutral-atom quantum processors into Microsoft’s Azure Quantum cloud service, marking a significant advancement in cloud-based quantum computing accessibility. This collaboration allows Azure Quantum users to utilize Pasqal’s unique technology to address complex computational challenges without the need for substantial infrastructure investments.

Neutral-atom quantum computing represents a notable shift from traditional quantum computing methods. Pasqal’s approach involves manipulating neutral atoms—atoms with an equal number of protons and electrons—using optical “tweezers” formed by laser light. These tweezers arrange the atoms into precise 2D and 3D arrays, creating highly scalable and energy-efficient quantum processors. Unlike many quantum systems that require ultra-cold environments, Pasqal’s technology operates at room temperature, reducing operational complexities and costs.

The integration with Azure Quantum offers users access to Pasqal’s analog quantum computational capabilities, which are particularly suited for data-intensive tasks such as process optimization and generative AI modeling. This cloud-based access democratizes quantum computing, enabling enterprises and research institutions to explore and develop quantum applications without the financial and logistical burdens associated with dedicated quantum hardware.

Loïc Henriet, co-CEO of Pasqal, emphasized the shared mission between Pasqal and Microsoft to make quantum technologies more accessible. He stated, “Pasqal is the first neutral-atom quantum computer on Microsoft Azure’s cloud service, a recognition of the robust technology we have built and are continuously improving according to an ambitious roadmap for quantum advantage.”

Microsoft’s Azure Quantum platform is designed as an open ecosystem, providing users with a diverse selection of quantum hardware and software solutions. The addition of Pasqal’s neutral-atom processors enhances this ecosystem by offering unique computational possibilities, including analog quantum computation, which are not feasible with other types of quantum processors.

Krysta Svore, Distinguished Engineer and Vice President of Quantum Software at Microsoft, highlighted the significance of this integration. She noted that Pasqal’s technology provides Azure Quantum users with new computational possibilities, opening up avenues for pursuing real-world quantum impacts.

The demand for quantum computing solutions is growing as industries seek to overcome the limitations of classical computing, particularly in areas requiring high-speed processing and complex problem-solving capabilities. Pasqal’s technology addresses these needs by offering a scalable and energy-efficient alternative to traditional quantum computing architectures.

Founded in 2019, Pasqal has rapidly positioned itself as a leader in neutral-atom quantum computing. The company’s co-founder, Professor Alain Aspect, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2022 for his work on entangled photons, underscoring the scientific foundation of Pasqal’s technology. In January 2023, Pasqal secured €108 million in funding to further develop its quantum processors and expand its market presence.

The integration with Azure Quantum is a strategic move that aligns with Pasqal’s goal to deliver a 1,000-qubit quantum processor by the end of 2023. This ambitious target aims to provide practical quantum advantages across various sectors, including finance, energy, and supercomputing.

For Microsoft, incorporating Pasqal’s technology into Azure Quantum enhances its commitment to providing a comprehensive and versatile quantum computing platform. The collaboration reflects Microsoft’s strategy to partner with innovative quantum hardware providers to enrich the Azure Quantum ecosystem and offer users a broad spectrum of quantum solutions.
