Turkish football fans burn down their own stadium

Dubai: Supporters of Turkish Super Lig club Eskisehirspor on Sunday destroyed their own football stadium, setting the stands on fire and vandalising them in the wake of the club’s last-ever match at the ground.

Immediately after the final whistle the pitch was invaded by fans who set about pulling down the goals before turning their attention to the aging stadium. The fracas was a demonstration of disgust for their team’s performance.

According to local reports, three fans were injured during the invasion and subsequently hospitalised after suffering minor injuries as a result of fire and smoke inhalation.

Eskisehirspor, who have been relegated to Turkey’s second tier, have confirmed plans to move to a newly-built 33,000-capacity stadium next season.

They lost their final game at the Eskisehir Ataturk Stadium 2-1 to Medipol Basaksehir.
