DUBAI // A worker who fell into a pit was saved after a five-hour rescue operation by Dubai Police.

Rescue teams carefully dug the man out and told him to remain calm as water and stones fell around him into the pit in Al Barsha 4.

The incident was reported to police at 8.15pm on Monday, said Lt Col Ahmed Bourguiba, deputy director of the search and rescue department.

Capt Abdullah Al Rahoumi led the rescue team, which used water suction devices, vehicles and other equipment to save the worker.

“The running water in the pit made it difficult to reach the trapped victim and slowed down the rescue operation,” Capt Al Rahoumi said.

The operation took five hours because groundwater had flood the area underneath the trapped worker, an official from the search and rescue department said.

Paramedics treated the worker for minor injuries. Dubai Civil Defence, ambulance services, Dubai Municipality and officers from Al Barsha Police Station took part in the rescue.
