DUBAI // A Dh800 million roads project to improve traffic flow in an area of Dubai has been endorsed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of the emirate.

Sheikh Mohammed directed the authority to immediately start road construction projects he endorsed “to cope with the upswing and demographic expansion of Dubai”, said Mattar Al Tayer, RTA director general.

The first phase of the project will be completed next year. It links Jumeirah with Al Khail and the Parallel roads (First Al Khail and Al Asayel roads).

The goal is to improve the junction of Latifa bint Hamdan and Umm Al Sheef streets, the Roads and Transport Authority said on Saturday.

The second phase, to be completed in early 2019, includes the improvement of the link between Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail roads with Jumeirah to the west and Dubailand to the east. Entrances to Al Quoz will also be improved.

A flyover bridge with three lanes in each direction will be built to serve traffic on Latifa bint Hamdan Street and a second-level bridge of two lanes in each direction will serve traffic on Al Asayel Road.

The intersection upgrades will reduce waiting time from three minutes to less than a minute. Congestion will be reduced by 78 per cent during evening rush hour, Mr Al Tayer said.

A ramp will be built at the intersection of Al Khail Road and the Business Bay Crossing to ease congestion.
