Casio has unveiled the DW-5000R, a meticulous re-creation of its inaugural G-SHOCK model, the DW-5000C, which first debuted in 1983. This release pays homage to the original design while integrating modern enhancements to meet contemporary standards. The DW-5000R is set to launch in Japan on December 13, 2024, priced at 33,000 yen , with global availability details yet to be announced.

The DW-5000C was a groundbreaking timepiece, conceptualized by Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe in 1981. After accidentally breaking a watch given to him by his father, Ibe was inspired to create a durable watch that could withstand significant impacts. This vision led to the development of the G-SHOCK line, with the DW-5000C embodying the “triple 10” concept: a 10-year battery life, 10-bar water resistance, and the ability to endure a 10-meter drop. The original model featured a shock-resistant structure with a stainless steel case, a hardened mineral glass crystal, and a “floating module” where the quartz mechanism was suspended within a urethane foam cradle.

The new DW-5000R stays true to its predecessor’s iconic design, including the emblematic octagonal shape and streamlined aesthetics. The case is constructed from stainless steel, and the original band design has been faithfully reproduced, matching the length, form, and dimple positioning of the 1983 version. However, subtle updates have been made to align with modern standards. For instance, the case size has slightly increased to 42.3mm from the original 41.6mm, and the buttons are shorter. Additionally, the water resistance marking now reads “20 BAR” instead of the original “200M.”

Incorporating contemporary technology, the DW-5000R features an LED backlight, enhancing visibility in low-light conditions. The bezel and band are made from biomass plastic, reflecting Casio’s commitment to reducing environmental impact. These updates ensure the watch meets current durability and performance standards while preserving the classic aesthetic that has made the G-SHOCK a cultural icon.

The DW-5000R is manufactured at Casio’s Yamagata factory in Japan, the same facility where the original DW-5000C was produced. This choice underscores Casio’s dedication to quality and authenticity in recreating the classic model. Unlike previous limited-edition reissues, the DW-5000R is expected to be a standard release, making it accessible to both new enthusiasts and long-time fans of the G-SHOCK brand.

Since its inception, the G-SHOCK line has evolved significantly, with over 200 different models released by 1998 and worldwide sales reaching 19 million units. The DW-5000C’s legacy continues to influence contemporary designs, with its emblematic octagonal shape and robust construction remaining central to the G-SHOCK identity. The DW-5000R serves as a testament to this enduring legacy, blending the original’s rugged appeal with modern advancements to meet the expectations of today’s consumers.
