Dubai's poorer workers get more choice on health insurance

Dubai Health Authority (DHA) on Tuesday announced that it has added three more health insurance companies to provide the Essential Benefits Plan insurance package, fixed between AED550-650, so that those with monthly salaries under AED4,000 receive adequate cover.

By adding Noor Takaful Insurance, Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company and Union Insurance, DHA said it is raising the number of insurance companies providing the package from nine to 12 companies.

According to the Dubai Health Insurance Law that came into effect in January 2014, the legal liability for every sponsor is to provide an essential benefits plan insurance package —  fixed between AED550-650.

The three additional companies where chosen out of 10 companies that applied to be a provider of the essential benefits plan package, the DHA said in a statement.

Humaid Al Qatami, chairman and director general of the DHA, said all health insurance companies must be committed to protecting members of society by providing them with quality healthcare services.

He said that the DHA has succeeded in covering 98 percent — more than four million – Dubai residents in the Dubai health Insurance scheme.

Dr Haidar Al Yousef, director of health funding at DHA said that the essential benefits plan package covers many services that include ensures maternity, emergency, medical tests, referrals, medication.

The 12 companies that provide the essential benefits plan package also include Axa Gulf Insurance, Takaful Emarat, Dar Al Takaful, Orient Insurance, Ras Al Khaima Insurance Company, Daman Health Insurance, Oman Insurance Company, Melife, National Insurance company.
