EA Open-Sources Command & Conquer Classics to Empower Modders

Electronic Arts has released the source code for four iconic Command & Conquer titles—Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, Renegade, and Generals—under the open-source GPL license. This initiative aims to support the modding community and ensure the preservation of these classic games. The source code is now accessible on EA’s GitHub page, although game assets and cinematics remain proprietary.

This move is not EA’s first foray into open-sourcing; in 2020, the company released the source code for its Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, which included Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert. However, the current release provides the original source code for these games, offering modders and developers a more authentic foundation for their projects.

Renegade and Generals are being open-sourced for the first time. Renegade, released in 2002, is a first- and third-person shooter set in the Tiberium universe. Generals, launched in 2003, is a strategy game depicting a near-future conflict involving the United States, China, and the fictional Global Liberation Army. The open-source release also includes Generals’ expansion, Zero Hour.

To further support the community, EA has introduced Steam Workshop support and a ‘Modding Support’ pack. This pack comprises source XML, schema, script, shader, and map files for all games utilizing the SAGE engine. These resources are designed to facilitate the creation and sharing of mods and maps, potentially leading to enhancements such as higher refresh rates and support for ultrawide resolutions.
