Japanese steel giants Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Corporation have secured a significant order from QatarEnergy for high-alloy seamless pipes. These pipes will be a crucial component in Qatar’s ambitious carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, marking a major step towards the country’s clean energy goals.
The project, spearheaded by QatarEnergy, involves constructing a “blue” ammonia manufacturing plant in the Mesaieed Industrial Zone, a key industrial hub in Qatar. This facility will be equipped with CCS technology, aiming to capture and store the carbon dioxide emissions generated during ammonia production.
Nippon Steel will be responsible for manufacturing the high-alloy seamless pipes, specifically designed to withstand the demanding conditions within a CCS project. These pipes boast superior strength and corrosion resistance, making them ideal for transporting captured carbon dioxide over long distances.
The use of Nippon Steel’s “NSCarbolex Neutral” green steel in this project adds another layer of significance. This innovative steel product is manufactured with a reduced carbon footprint, aligning perfectly with Qatar’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions. Notably, this represents the first instance of high-alloy seamless pipes and low-carbon steel being employed in a large-scale CCS project across the Middle East.
Sumitomo Corporation, a leading Japanese trading house, will act as the intermediary, facilitating the supply of these specialized pipes to QatarEnergy. The contract encompasses roughly 1, 000 metric tons of seamless pipes, signifying a substantial contribution from the Japanese steel industry towards Qatar’s environmental endeavors.
The blue ammonia plant, expected to be operational by 2026, has a projected production capacity of 1. 2 million tons annually. This project not only holds immense potential for reducing Qatar’s carbon footprint but also positions the country as a frontrunner in the production of clean ammonia, a versatile fuel with growing applications in various sectors.
