DUBAI // The notorious Dubai-Sharjah traffic could soon be eased after a series of new roads serving residential areas along the route was completed.
The Roads and Transport Authority finished road works in 16 residential districts of Dubai at a cost of Dh835 million.
In April, new internal roads at Al Mamzar and Al Nahda 1 will open, and improvements to streets in Nad Al Sheba 4 are due for completion by the end of this year.
Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the authority, said the project covers the construction of single-lane and dual carriageway streets across a 20-kilometre stretch, revamping road networks in the area, and providing 30 parking places.
The project works also included the installation of more lights on Amman Street to streamline the flow of traffic at the entrances and exits of Nahda 1, along with directional signs, ground markings and traffic signals.
“These projects are part of the Five-Year Plan 2012-2016, endorsed by Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, for constructing internal roads in several Dubai districts at a total cost of about Dh1 billion,” he said.
“The construction of these roads stems from the desire of Sheikh Mohammed to improve the road network, to meet the needs of residents and address the requirements of urban development and demographic expansion, which will eventually translate into happiness for the people.”
“Next month, the RTA will open the internal roads project at Al Mamzar and Nahda 1, which comprise four districts, North and South of Cairo Street and North and South of Baghdad Street, at a cost of Dh118m.”
