Streamer Dr Disrespect Severs Ties With Game Studio After Ban Controversy

Popular streamer Dr Disrespect, real name Guy Beahm, has parted ways with his own video game development studio, Midnight Society, following allegations surrounding his 2020 ban from the streaming platform Twitch. The news comes after years of speculation about the reason behind the sudden ban, which Twitch itself never publicly disclosed.

Midnight Society, founded in cofoundation by Beahm, was set to develop a multiplayer online game. The streamer had been a major draw for the studio, leveraging his massive online following to generate hype for the project. However, recent reports alleged that Beahm’s Twitch ban stemmed from inappropriate communications with a minor on the platform. While Beahm has never publically addressed the specifics of the allegations, Midnight Society acted swiftly to sever ties.

“On Friday evening we became aware of an allegation against one of our co-founders, Guy Beahm aka Dr Disrespect, ” the studio wrote in a statement. “We assumed his innocence and began speaking with parties involved. In order to maintain our principles and standards as a studio and individuals, we needed to act. ” The statement concluded by announcing the termination of their relationship with Beahm.

The news throws the future of Midnight Society’s project into question. Beahm was a central figure in the studio, and his departure may lead to difficulties attracting investors or securing partnerships. The studio itself has not commented on the future of the game or its development team.

Dr Disrespect, known for his brash online persona and athletic attire, was one of Twitch’s most popular streamers at the time of his ban. The platform has increasingly taken a hard line against misconduct by streamers, and the severity of the ban, issued just after a lucrative new deal between streamer and platform had been announced, fueled speculation about the reason behind it.

While the allegations against Beahm have not been proven, the streamer’s association with Midnight Society had become a liability. The studio’s decision to cut ties suggests that they prioritized protecting their reputation over maintaining a connection to a potentially tarnished figure.

The situation highlights the precarious nature of online personalities and the power that streaming platforms hold. With careers built on online communities, streamers can face significant consequences for even unsubstantiated allegations. It remains to be seen how Dr Disrespect’s career will be affected in the long run, and what path Midnight Society will take without their co-founder.
