A groundbreaking taxi-sharing service has begun between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, transforming the 140-kilometer journey into a more accessible, economical option for commuters. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) launched this pilot service aiming to enhance intercity transportation options and to test demand for shared, eco-friendly travel solutions between the UAE’s two major cities.
The service operates through a dedicated fleet of seven-seat vehicles that allow passengers to book individual seats instead of entire cabs. By leveraging the advanced RTA mobile app, travelers can conveniently reserve seats and pay fares before the journey, reducing the cost per passenger compared to traditional, individual taxi hires. These shared taxis are equipped with the latest navigation and communication tools, enabling efficient and timely travel on a route known for high demand among professionals and tourists alike.
With the RTA’s focus on sustainability and cost-efficiency, the initiative seeks to alleviate congestion on the main highway connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which remains a critical thoroughfare in the UAE’s transportation network. Traditionally, private vehicles and buses are the primary modes of transport along this corridor. The introduction of a shared taxi service fills a gap by offering flexibility not found in buses and affordability that private taxis often lack.
