The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has cracked down on online piracy, blocking over 1, 000 websites found to be illegally distributing copyrighted entertainment content. The Ministry of Economy (MoE) announced the significant rise in website suspensions on Thursday, attributing a surge in activity to the recent holy month of Ramadan.

According to Dr. Abdulrahman Hassan Al Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for Intellectual Property Rights at the MoE, the “InstaBlock” initiative, implemented specifically for Ramadan, identified and blocked a total of 1, 117 websites during the period. This figure represents a substantial increase compared to the 62 websites blocked for similar offenses in 2023. Dr. Al Muaini highlighted the success of the initiative, crediting its “comprehensive approach” and “specialized instant response service” for addressing copyright infringements in live online broadcasts.

The targeted websites were primarily found to be offering unauthorized access to movies, TV shows, and other multimedia content owned by various media networks. This practice not only undermines the revenue streams of legitimate content creators but also poses potential security risks for users who access these illegal platforms.

The UAE has established itself as a regional leader in intellectual property protection, implementing robust legal frameworks and enforcement mechanisms. The MoE plays a pivotal role in safeguarding intellectual property rights through initiatives like “InstaBlock. ” This commitment extends to fostering a vibrant creative economy within the UAE, where innovation and artistic expression are encouraged and flourish.

The Ministry’s proactive approach to tackling online piracy sends a clear message to content providers that the UAE is a secure and reliable market for their works. Additionally, it empowers local content creators by ensuring a level playing field where their work is valued and protected.

While the specific details of the blocked websites were not disclosed, the MoE’s actions demonstrate the UAE’s unwavering stance against online copyright infringement. This ongoing effort is crucial for safeguarding the interests of content creators, businesses, and ultimately, internet users in the region.
