Police and civil defence emergency teams rushed to the accident and tackled the fire. Investigations are under way to determine the circumstances leading up to the accident.

Col Hamad Al Balushi of Abu Dhabi traffic police stressed the importance of motorists observing traffic laws and regulations and exercising care and attention when behind the wheel and not exceeding speed limits. Col Al Balushi said the vast majority of serious accidents that led to deaths and injuries were due to excessive speed.

The crash is the worst since four members of an Emirati family were killed in an accident in Umm Al Quwain last month.
