Kuwait’s Failaka Island to Join UNESCO World Heritage List

Failaka Island, a historically significant site in Kuwait, is set to be added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. This development follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kuwait’s National Council for Culture, Arts, and Letters (NCCAL) and the World Monuments Fund. The agreement was formalized by NCCAL Secretary-General Mohammad Al-Jassar and World Monuments Fund President and CEO Benedicte de Montlaur.

Failaka Island, located in the Arabian Gulf, holds substantial archaeological and cultural significance. The island is known for its rich history that dates back to ancient times, featuring remnants from various historical periods, including the Hellenistic, Islamic, and Ottoman eras. The island’s unique blend of historical layers and its strategic location have made it a site of major interest for historians and archaeologists.

The MoU marks a significant step in preserving Failaka Island’s heritage and promoting its historical importance on a global scale. Under the agreement, both organizations will collaborate on conservation projects and initiatives aimed at preserving the island’s historical sites. This partnership is expected to enhance international recognition and support for the island’s preservation efforts.
